Rest From DefendingProverbs 27:2

The Man You Stop Telling Things To

This message is for A man has never let a wrong fact go by uncorrected in forty years and has slowly become the person his family stops telling things to, which he found out from a grandchild who did not mean to say it.

His granddaughter told him about a bird.

She is seven. She had seen it in the yard and she was full of it, and she said it was a hawk, and it was almost certainly a kestrel, and he said so. Kindly. He explained the difference in the tail, which is genuinely interesting, and he was right, and she listened.

And then she said, oh, and went to find her mother.

He has been thinking about it since. Not the bird. The oh.

Because he heard it. Forty years of hearing it and this time he heard it, and once you have heard a thing like that you start noticing the pattern behind it, and the pattern is that nobody in his family brings him anything anymore.

They tell each other. He can hear them in the kitchen. They come to him for advice about machinery and money and the roof, and they are glad of him, and they never once tell him something just because it happened.

Somewhere back down the line, without meaning to, he stopped being somebody you tell a bird to.

If you have heard your own version of the oh, you know exactly what I mean. And I am not going to tell you what it means about you. I am going to tell you what it costs.

The habit that never announces itself

Here is what I want to describe, and you can decide for yourself how much of it is about you.

Correcting is not an act of will. That is the difficulty with it. It happens at the speed of a reflex, and it feels like accuracy, which is a thing you have valued your whole life and were right to value. A wrong fact goes past and something in you simply reaches out and sets it upright, the way you would set upright a chair that had been knocked over.

Nobody who does this is doing it to win. That is worth saying clearly, because you have probably been half accusing yourself since the second paragraph and it is not the case.

But look at what a proverb says about who is supposed to do the establishing.

Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips.Proverbs 27:2

It sounds like it is about boasting and it is about something wider than boasting. It is about who does the work of putting you in your right place. Proverbs says: not you. Let it come from somewhere else. Which means all the small daily labor of establishing that you are the one who knows about the tail feathers is work you were specifically excused from.

You are excused from establishing yourself, and the excusing is written rather than being a kindness I am offering you. That is not a rebuke. It is written in Proverbs 27:2, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a man's ears into the place where he actually lives.

So the reflex has not been rigor. You have a place in that family that no correction ever secured and no silence can take, and it is already yours at that table. The word settled that before your grandchildren were born, and the same Spirit who inspired it is in the yard while you read this.

What a family does when it stops bringing things

Nobody decides it. That is the thing to understand, because if somebody had decided it you could go and talk to them about it.

It works like this. A child brings you a bird. The bird is set upright. The child gets a true fact and loses the thing she came with, which was not information. She came with delight and she went away with taxonomy, and both of those are real but only one of them was on offer.

Do that eleven times over four years and she learns, without ever forming the thought, that the yard is a thing to tell her mother about.

And the loss is yours. She still loves you. She will still ask you about the roof in twenty years. What you will not get is the bird.

You have permission to receive a thing without improving it, and the permission was given rather than earned by finally being told you are right about the kestrel. Proverbs 27 puts the establishing in somebody else's mouth; His Spirit is the one who makes a man able to hear a wrong fact go past and leave it lying there.

One plain word before we go on, because a page cannot see the house you are in. If part of the reason you cannot let anything go is that somebody near you makes you pay for every mistake, nothing here is asking you to absorb that. Reaching for help is not a failure of humility, and in the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour.

The breakthrough

You do not have to be right for God to be good to you.

That is not a suggestion that you were wrong about the kestrel. You were not. It is a statement about where your standing is kept, and it is not kept in the accuracy of the room.

You are held by God this evening whether or not one fact in this house is ever corrected again. Proverbs 27:2 excused you from establishing yourself long before you had a family to do it in front of, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.

And hear this plainly, because I have been careful all the way down and I will not spoil it now: I have not told you that you are proud. I do not know that. No page does, and any page that pretends to is not worth reading. What has been described is a reflex and what it has cost, and the cost has been mostly yours.

What He does with the room you take from here is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is to let one thing go past. His part is what He builds on it.

Declare this over yourself

Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than fifty years of being accurate. What He does with the room you take is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Proverbs 27:2 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a man who has been setting the world upright since before he was married.

  1. Correction I have been making for forty years, you are not going out of my mouth today. Scripture says let another praise you and not your own mouth, which excuses me from the whole daily business of establishing myself. My granddaughter came to me with a bird and went away with taxonomy, and I am not doing that again.
  2. Fear that letting a wrong fact lie there would make me a man who does not care about the truth, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. The establishing was given to somebody else's mouth, so there is nothing in the reflex left for me to gain. Take your hand off my answer.
  3. Lord, You have established me and You did not ask me to help. I am letting one thing go past today and I am asking her what color it was. The establishing is Yours, the quiet is mine, and I would rather have the bird than the tail feathers.
