Rest From DefendingJames 3:17

Right And Tired

This message is for A man has been right for thirty years about the harm done to his community, has the documents to prove it, and has begun to carry the rightness like a stone he cannot set down even at home.

There are four boxes. He knows what is in each one and he could find any page inside two minutes.

Thirty years. Hearings, minutes, a survey from 1971 that proves the boundary was where his grandmother always said it was, three letters from a department that contradict each other, and a photograph taken in 1958 that is the single most useful document in the whole set.

He was right in the first year and he is right now, and the thing that has been done to his community was done, and no part of this page is going to soften that or ask him to be reasonable about it.

But there is something he has not told anybody.

He carried a box into the house last March, set it down on the table, and could not lift it back off. Not physically. He stood there with his hands on it and could not make himself pick it up.

He has been carrying it since the first hearing. That is thirty years of a weight he never once put down, not at a funeral, not at a wedding, not on the water at five in the morning where he goes to be nothing in particular.

He is right. He is also so tired that he has begun to think in the tone of the letters.

If you have been right about something real for a very long time, you know what I mean. And nothing here is asking you to stop.

Holding a truth and holding a position are two different actions

Let me draw a line carefully, because everything in this article depends on it, and because a careless version of this line has been used against people like you for a hundred years.

A truth is a thing that stays true whether or not you are holding it. The survey says what it says. The photograph shows what it shows. If you put every box down tomorrow and never opened one again, not a single fact in them would change.

A position is different. A position is a stance you occupy, and it has to be occupied, continuously, by you, and the occupying is the part that costs.

You have been doing both for thirty years and only one of them was ever required.

Now read what James says about wisdom from above, and notice a phrase in it that people rush past.

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.James 3:17

Easy to be entreated. Approachable. Open to reason. That is listed as a property of heavenly wisdom, sitting there beside pure, which comes first and is not negotiable.

Notice that the pure comes first. James is not asking you to be soft about a wrong thing. He puts purity at the head of the list precisely so that the peaceable part cannot be used to bully anybody into agreeing with an injustice.

You are free to be approachable without becoming agreeable, and the two were never the same thing. That is not a rebuke of thirty years. It is written in James 3:17, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a man's ears into the place where he actually lives.

So the weight is not the truth. You have a case that stays true with your hands off it, and the truth of it is already secured somewhere other than your grip. The word settled that before the first hearing, and the same Spirit who inspired it is at the table while you read this.

What thirty years of occupying does to a man

Here is the part nobody writes down in any of those boxes.

An occupied position changes the person occupying it. Not their convictions. Their range. After a decade you have a way of hearing a sentence, and a set of things you already know somebody is about to say, and after three decades the shape of it has gone into your voice.

You noticed it in the letters. You said you have begun to think in their tone. That is the cost and it is precise, and it is not a moral failing. It is what long occupation does to anybody, on any side, and it happens to the people who were right at least as often as to anybody else.

And here is the loss that matters. You cannot be surprised anymore. Not by an ally, not by a young person with a new idea, not by the department if it ever does the right thing. A man holding a position for thirty years has to see everything through it, and that includes the good things.

You have permission to be surprised again, and the permission does not cost you one page in those boxes. James 3 says wisdom from above is pure first and then open to reason; His Spirit is the one who makes a man able to set a weight down without setting down what is true.

One plain word here, because a page cannot see the room you are in. If any part of what you are carrying involves somebody being harmed now, nothing here is asking anyone to absorb that. Reaching for help is not a failure of humility, and in the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour.

The breakthrough

You do not have to be right for God to be good to you.

That is not the same as saying you are not right. You are, and thirty years of documents say so, and nothing about His goodness is a comment on the case. It means His goodness was never being decided at those hearings, so there is a place to set the weight that does not involve conceding an inch.

You are held by God this evening with all four boxes still shut, and you were held at every hearing you ever sat through. James 3:17 was written long before the survey and the photograph, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.

And hear this plainly, because it is the whole point of a page like this: nobody is asking you to drop the justice. The wrong that was done was done. What is being described is the difference between a truth, which stays true in a box on a table, and a position, which has to be occupied by a man, day and night, for thirty years, at a cost that has come entirely out of him.

What He does with the room you take from here is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is to put the stone down without dropping the truth. His part is what He builds on it.

Declare this over yourself

Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than a survey, a photograph, or thirty years of being correct. What He does with the room you take is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. James 3:17 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a man who has not put a weight down since the first hearing.

  1. Weight I have carried since the hearing, you are not the truth and I am setting you down. Scripture says the wisdom from above is pure first and then open to reason, which means being approachable was never the same as being agreeable. Every fact in those four boxes stays exactly as true with my hands off it, and my hands are coming off it tonight.
  2. Fear that setting the weight down would look like letting them win, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. A truth does not need my grip to remain true, so there is nothing in the carrying that the case actually requires. Take your hand off the back of my neck.
  3. Lord, You judge rightly and this whole thing has been in front of You since before the first letter. I am going down to the water at five with nothing in my hands and I am standing there as a man. The judging is Yours, the rest is mine, and I am not going to think in their tone anymore.
