Dignity KeptPsalm 82:3

Because I Am The Eldest

This message is for A man absorbs every insult at every family gathering because he is the eldest and it keeps the peace, and the peace it keeps has begun to cost his own children their sense of what a father is allowed to be.

He was fourteen when it started and nobody sat him down and explained it.

His father went, and there was a period nobody in that family talks about, and somewhere in it he became the one who makes things all right. Not the provider; there were others doing that. The one who takes the temperature of a room and does whatever it needs, which at fourteen mostly meant absorbing whatever was aimed at him so that it did not go anywhere worse.

He is fifty one. He has been doing it for thirty seven years and he is extremely good at it.

At every gathering there is a thing said to him. It varies. It is often about his work, sometimes about his weight, once memorably about his wife in a way that was passed off as affection.

He takes all of it. He laughs, or he says something that turns it, and everybody relaxes, and the day goes on being a good day, and everybody afterward says what a good day it was.

Two things have changed recently and both are why he is reading this.

His own daughter, who is nineteen, said in the car: why do you let them talk to you like that. And his son, who is twelve, has started doing the same thing at school and got in trouble for it and could not explain to anybody why he had thought it was funny.

If you have been keeping a room comfortable since you were a child, this article is for you.

Peace and silence are different things

Let me say the plain thing first, because you may have been waiting thirty seven years.

Keeping the peace is a real and honorable thing and you have a gift for it and this page is not going to take it off you. Rooms need people like you.

But peace has a definition, and it is not the absence of noise. Peace is a state in which things are actually well between people. A gathering where one man absorbs everything so that nobody else has to feel anything is not peaceful, it is managed, and you are the one managing it, and it costs one person.

Now read what God says to the ones who have power in a room, because it is an instruction rather than a suggestion.

Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.Psalm 82:3

That psalm is God standing up in a council and telling the people with authority what they are for. It is not addressed to the one being pushed around. It is addressed to everybody else in the room, and the assumption running through it is that a room where one person absorbs everything is a room that has failed.

You are somebody God stands up in a council to defend, and He does not ask you to arrange the room instead. That is not my opinion about your family. It is written in Psalm 82:3, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a man's ears into the place where he actually lives.

So thirty seven years of taking it has not been humility. You have a dignity God gave and no gathering can spend, and it is intact this afternoon. The word settled that before you were fourteen, and the same Spirit who inspired it is at that table while you read this.

The job you were given at fourteen

Here is what is worth saying, and there is no blame anywhere in it.

At fourteen you took a job nobody gave you and nobody named. It was a good job and it probably held that family together in a year when something had to.

But a job taken at fourteen does not resign itself. It goes on running, in the same shape, thirty seven years later, in a room that is not that room and a year that is not that year, and nobody notices because it works.

And your daughter noticed. That is what the question in the car was. Nineteen year olds ask the question everybody else in a family has agreed not to.

And your son is twelve and he has learned the shape of it from the outside. He does not know he learned it. He watched a room for years and worked out who gets talked to like that and who does the talking, and then he tried the other side of it at school, and got in trouble, and could not explain himself, because you cannot explain a thing you absorbed rather than decided.

You have permission to hand back a job you were handed at fourteen, and handing it back is not abandoning anybody. Psalm 82 has God telling a room what it owes the one being pushed around; His Spirit is the one who makes a man able to see plainly what he has been carrying.

Now, plainly, and this is the part that matters most on this page. Nothing here is telling you to confront your family, to skip the next gathering, or to cut anybody off. I do not know your family, who is fragile in it, what your mother's health is, or what a wrong move at the wrong moment would cost, and a page that issued you an instruction would be pretending to a knowledge it does not have. That is yours, and it belongs to the people who actually know your life, and to God.

What can be said is that you are allowed to tell one person the truth. And if any of it has ever gone past words, nothing here is asking anybody to absorb that: tell one person who can act, and in the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour.

The breakthrough

God never asked you for your dignity, and He is not served by your being harmed.

There is no offering going up out of those gatherings. Nothing is being formed in you by the thing that gets said about your weight, and nothing is being built in the family by your absorbing it. What there is, is a man doing a job he was handed at fourteen, well, at his own expense, and calling it peace.

You are humble before God this afternoon, and that has never once been the same thing as being available to absorb. Psalm 82:3 settled what a room owes long before you were born, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.

And notice what has not been said here. Nobody has told you that your family is bad, or that you should make a stand at the next gathering, or that any of them will change. Those are not this page's to promise.

What He does next is His, in His own way. Your part today is one true sentence and one step toward somebody who can act. His part is what He builds on it.

Declare this over yourself

Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than thirty seven years of keeping rooms comfortable. What He does next is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Psalm 82:3 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a man who took a job at fourteen that nobody ever named.

  1. Job I was given at fourteen, you are not humility and you are handed back. Scripture has God standing up in a council telling the people with authority to defend the one being pushed around, and it is not addressed to the one absorbing it. Peace is not the absence of noise, and a gathering where one man takes everything so that nobody else has to feel anything is managed rather than peaceful.
  2. Fear that saying I mind would break something in this family, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. My son learned the shape of it from the outside and could not explain himself at school, because you cannot explain a thing you absorbed instead of deciding. Take your hand off my face at that table.
  3. Lord, You never asked me for my dignity and You are not served by my being the one it lands on. I am saying out loud today that this is not humility and I am telling my daughter she was right. The dignity is Yours to give, the saying is mine, and she has been waiting since that car.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
