Marian carried her own boxes down her own front steps in the rain, and the tape on the third one had gone soft, and she carried it underneath with both arms the way you carry a child who has fallen asleep.
It does not matter here what happened. It was taken. That is the whole of what needs saying and it is more than she has managed to say to most people.
Number 14 came out when she was on her fourth trip. He did not say a word, which she has thought about a great deal since. He walked down, took hold of the gate, and held it open for eleven minutes in the rain in his slippers, and when the last box went in he nodded once and went back inside.
Everyone else had a sentence. Everything happens for a reason. God is teaching you something. This will make you stronger. All of them delivered warmly, all of them by people who love her, and every single one landed on her chest like another box.
You know the weight of those sentences.
Somebody has said one to you in the last month. And you nodded, because they meant well and you did not have the energy, and afterwards you sat down on a floor somewhere in a smaller room than the one you used to have, and you thought: nobody has yet come and sat down here. They all talk to me from up there.
The verse with two addresses in it
I want to give you a sentence from Isaiah, and I want you to notice that God gives His own address in it twice.
For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: "I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite."Isaiah 57:15
Read the verb in the second half. Not visits. Not looks in on. Not comes when called. Dwells. It is the same word He uses for the high and holy place, which means the low place is not an outreach program He runs from the good address. It is an address. He lives at both.
I have spent my working life around buildings and I will tell you what that means to a builder. A man with two properties keeps one of them for show and lives in the other, and you can always tell which is which by where the kettle is. God gave both of His and then told us exactly what He is doing at the second one: reviving. Not inspecting. Not teaching a lesson. Reviving.
You are not being talked to from up there. You are being lived with, down here. I am not softening anything for you; that is what the written sentence says, and it is His Spirit who makes it a present fact in the room you are actually sitting in rather than a fine line in an old book.
I am not going to tell you what this is for
Now let me clear something out of the way, because it is standing between you and the rest of this.
I do not know why this happened to you. Neither did the people who told you. Job had four friends with complete explanations and God's own verdict on all four of them at the end was that they had not spoken rightly about Him, and Job never did get told the reason. He got God, which turned out to be the thing he actually wanted.
So I am not going to hand you a purpose for the floor. I am not going to call this a humbling, either, because being humbled is a posture you take and what happened to you was done to you, and putting those two words on the same shelf is how a good idea becomes a cruelty. And I am certainly not going to suggest that something in you drew this down. You were not sent here to be corrected, and nothing about your character summoned this. Scripture says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit, and it attaches no conditions and demands no explanation from them first, and His Spirit is doing that nearness now.
One more thing, plainly, because it matters more than the rest of this article. If what put you on this floor is somebody hurting you, then getting yourself somewhere safe is not pride, it is not a failure of humility, and nothing on this page asks you to stay. Tell somebody who can actually help. Being low before God has never once meant being available for harm.
The floor is where the reviving is done
You have God's own company in the smaller room, and you have it now, not later. He promised through Isaiah to revive the heart of the crushed, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for you to be presentable before He starts.
Notice where He does His best work in the record. A widow with a handful of flour. A man in a cistern up to his knees in mud. A prophet under a tree asking to die, who got fed, and let sleep, and fed again, and was not lectured once. Heaven's response to a person at the bottom is remarkably practical and almost never verbal at first.
That is what number 14 understood in his slippers and the others did not. He came down the steps.
One plain word, because a page cannot see the room you are in. If the weight has gone as far as thinking about not being here at all, please tell somebody living today. In the United States, 988 answers by call or text at any hour, and if you are in danger right now, use your emergency number. That is not a failure of anything. It is what a person does when the ground goes.
Here is the turn, and it is not a demand for effort.
The Lord has never required a good posture before He comes down. What He does ask, over and over in His word, is that we open our mouths, because the mouth is where a person and the truth actually meet. Jesus put the smallest amount of faith anybody could imagine against the biggest thing on the horizon, and gave the verdict to the small one, and the one condition He named was that it be spoken to the thing in the way rather than churned over in the chest.
You have every right to speak from where you are, because what belongs to Christ has been given to you and none of it was withdrawn when the house was. That is the written arrangement, and it is His Spirit who carries a sentence said on a floor as surely as one said from a platform.
So do not tidy up first. Speak from the floor. It is a recognized address.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, sitting exactly where you are, and do not stand up first if standing up is not in you today. What belongs to Christ belongs to you, and it came with Him rather than with the house, the job or the standing you had, so you are speaking from ground nobody took. Scripture is what these rest on and the Holy Spirit is what makes them living. Name the mountain honestly as you go: it is not only the loss, it is the sentence somebody said to you kindly in a kitchen that you have been carrying ever since. And what He does with the rest of this, and when, is His to decide, which is exactly why none of these lines is a bargain.
- Floor of this house, you are not a punishment and you are not a lesson I failed to learn the easy way. Scripture says God dwells in the high and holy place and also with the lowly, and the second address is not a visit, it is where He lives.
- Idea that I earned this floor, you have no standing in my house and I hand you over in the name of Jesus. The written word never once asks a crushed person to explain themselves before He comes near, and He was already down here when I arrived.
- Lord, You are on this floor with me and You are not talking to me from above it. I thank You, because Your word says You revive the heart of the crushed and Your Spirit is doing that here, and I am saying out loud today where I actually am with nothing added about what it must be for.
