More Grace GivenProverbs 3:34

I Cannot Find The Bottom

This message is for A man has been trying to earn God's favor by going lower, has been going lower for six years, and has never once reached a floor at which anything settled.

He started six years ago with a genuine thing, which is worth saying first because everything else on this page depends on it.

He had come to the end of something and he understood, properly and for the first time, that God gives grace to the humble. That was real and it was true and nothing in the six years since has been dishonest.

What he did with it was this: he set out to get low enough.

It has been methodical. He stopped correcting people. Then he stopped mentioning his own work. Then he stopped accepting thanks, and then he stopped putting himself forward for anything at all, and about two years ago he began taking the worst of every job on principle.

None of those is a bad thing on its own and several of them have done other people good.

But there is a question underneath all of it that he has never once said out loud, and it is this: is this low enough yet?

Because nothing has settled. Every level he reaches turns out to have another one under it, and the arithmetic has no floor in it, and he is six years in and more tired than when he started and quietly beginning to suspect that there is no bottom to this at all.

If you have been going down and cannot find a floor, you know exactly what I mean.

Given, not earned

Let me put the verse in front of you and then say the plain thing about the word that does all the work.

Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.Proverbs 3:34

Giveth. He gives it.

That is the whole of what you have been getting wrong for six years, and it is one word, and once you see it the six years make a kind of terrible sense.

A wage is calculated. You do a certain amount and a corresponding amount comes back, and if the amount that comes back is not enough, the answer is to do more, and there is no natural stopping point in that arrangement.

A gift is not calculated. Nobody earns a gift by degrees and nobody gets more of it by qualifying harder, and the question is this low enough yet does not apply to a gift at all.

You have grace that is given rather than paid, and there is no depth at which it starts. That is not my encouragement. It is written in Proverbs 3:34, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a man's ears into the place where he actually lives.

And there is a second thing in that verse and it is the one that ends the search. The lowly is not a rank. It is not a measurement of how far somebody has gone down. It is a description of the place where grace is lying, and grace is lying there, and the whole of your six years has been an attempt to get low enough to reach a thing that was already at your feet.

So the search has not been humility. You have been standing in the low place for six years, and the grace has been on the ground the whole time. The word settled that before you began, and the same Spirit who inspired it is at that table while you read this.

Why there was never going to be a floor

Here is the mechanism, and it is worth naming exactly because it explains the tiredness.

A search for a floor is a measurement. And a measurement requires a measurer, and the measurer is you, and you have been checking your own depth for six years, which means the whole exercise has kept you at the center of it.

That is the paradox and it is not your fault, and almost everybody who takes this seriously walks into it. Nobody can go low enough by trying, because the trying is a form of standing up.

And notice one more thing, gently. If grace came at a certain depth, then the man who reached that depth would have earned it, and it would not be grace anymore, and the entire arrangement would collapse into wages. So the floor you have been looking for cannot exist, not because you are failing to find it, but because a gospel with a floor in it would not be a gospel.

The search was always going to end with a tired man and no bottom.

You have permission to call it off, and calling it off is not giving up on the thing you were after. Proverbs 3 puts the verb as giving; His Spirit is the one who makes a man able to stop measuring his own depth and just be where he is.

One plain word, because a page cannot see the room you are in. If part of why you keep going lower is that somebody near you makes you pay for taking up space, nothing here is asking you to absorb that. Reaching for help is not a failure of humility, and in the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour.

The breakthrough

God gives grace to the lowly, and He is giving it to you today.

Present tense, and no depth attached. Not at a certain level. Not when you have finally got under something. Today, six years in, tired, with no floor found and none coming.

You have grace lying in the low place, and it was lying there in the first month before you had given up anything at all. Proverbs 3:34 settled that the verb is giving, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.

And notice what is not here, because it is the last thing this whole site has to say and it matters more than anything else on the page.

Nobody is grading you. Nothing here sets you a practice to maintain, and nothing promises a lifting on any date anybody can name. There is no level you are working toward and there never was, and the six years were not wasted and were not required.

The low place is not a rank and it is not an achievement. It is a place, and there is grace in it, and you have been standing in it the entire time you were looking for the way down.

What He does with today is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is one small thing. His part is what He builds on it.

Declare this over yourself

Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than six years of going down. What He does with today is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Proverbs 3:34 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a man who has been checking his own depth since before he can properly remember.

  1. Search for a floor low enough to satisfy Him, you are called off. Scripture says He gives grace to the lowly, and gives is the whole of it, because a wage is calculated and a gift is not and the question is this low enough does not apply to a gift. A gospel with a floor in it would have stopped being a gospel.
  2. Fear that calling off the search is giving up on the thing I was after, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. Nobody gets low by trying, because the trying is a form of standing up, and I have been the measurer of my own depth for six years. Take your hand off my shoulders.
  3. Lord, You give it and You have been giving it since the first month before I had given up one single thing. I am doing one small thing today and then I am stopping and not looking for a harder one. The giving is Yours, the standing is mine, and I struck water a long way up.
