She can match a color by eye. Nineteen years on the same counter and she can look at a chip off somebody's baseboard, hold it up to the window, and know before she touches the machine that it wants a shade more raw umber than the code says, because the sun has been on that wall since the seventies and the code does not know about the sun.
The machine is loud and the tins come off the shaker warm. There is a lad on the tills who has been there five weeks and a man in a safety vest waiting for six liters of magnolia and a woman with a stroller asking whether the blue on the card is the blue in real life.
A rep came in that morning with a folder and a new range, and he looked round the shop for somebody senior and said, brightly, so who is it I want to be speaking to about this. And she said, without thinking about it at all, the way you say your own zip code: oh, I just do the paint.
Nineteen years. Not one wrong tin. And out it came, smooth as anything, and afterwards she stood there stirring a five liter and felt the small familiar drop, the one that has been happening for so long she no longer names it, because naming it would feel like making a fuss.
She was taught that a humble person is a small person. She learned it young, from people who loved her and meant it kindly, and she has been obedient to it for four decades, and the obedience has cost her about an inch a year.
If you have your own version of that sentence, the one that comes out before you have decided anything, then you know the drop I mean. And you have probably never once been told that the sentence is not humility.
There is an amount you ought to think, and it is not nothing
Let me say the plain thing first, because you may have been waiting a very long while to hear it. Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It never was. Whoever handed you that, handed it to you in good faith, and it was wrong.
And it was not foolish of you to take it. That matters, so I am going to be exact about it. You took an instruction from people you trusted, you obeyed it faithfully for years at real personal cost, and obedience to a badly worded instruction is not stupidity. It is loyalty aimed at the wrong number. There is nothing to be ashamed of in the aiming.
Now look at what the word actually asks for.
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.Romans 12:3
Read that again with a steward's eye, because there is a word in it that most people walk straight past. Than he ought. Paul does not say do not think of yourself. He says do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, which means there is an amount you ought, and Paul assumes you know that, and he moves straight on to the real instruction: think with sober judgment, according to the measure God assigned you.
Sober judgment is a weighing word. It is the word for a clear head over a set of figures. And the whole point of a clear head over figures is accuracy, in both directions. Anyone who has ever kept books for anybody knows this: an asset written up beyond its worth is a false entry, and an asset written down below its worth is exactly the same false entry facing the other way. Both of them are wrong. Only one of them gets called modesty.
So here is what is true of you at the paint counter, and it is not my compliment, it is arithmetic. You are the size God made you and not one inch under. That is not flattery from me; it is what is written into the sentence Paul chose, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a line like that go past your ears and into the place where you actually live.
Which means the shrinking was never obedience. It was an inaccuracy, kept honestly, for years, out of love. There is no sin in you to root out here. There is a set of books to correct.
And you have not been handed self-promotion instead. I want to be very careful here, because a reader who has spent forty years going down is not helped by being told to start going up. That would only be the same false entry the other way round, and it would be just as tiring. Humility is not a size at all. It is a posture: a person standing at their true measure in front of a God who is immeasurably larger, and knowing exactly which of the two of them is which. You can be at full height and bowed. In fact that is the only way it works, because a person crouching cannot bow. There is nowhere further down for them to go.
You have grace on you for this, and the word says where it goes: God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble. Notice grace is given, not earned by going low enough. The Spirit who lives in you is not measuring how small you have made yourself this week and releasing supply accordingly.
Now, how does a correction like that actually happen in a person? By the mouth, and there is a scene in Exodus that is almost embarrassing to read.
God tells Moses to go and speak, and Moses answers with a shrinking sentence of his own: I am not eloquent, I am slow of speech and of tongue. It is not false. It is probably true. And God does not accept it. He asks who made the mouth in the first place, and then He says the thing that ends the argument: now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.
You were given a mouth by somebody, and He is not embarrassed by the work He did. Scripture keeps showing that speaking is how a correction gets entered, which is why God so often asks a person to say out loud a thing their feelings have not caught up with, and His Spirit is the one who carries the sentence past the ceiling.
One plain word before the next part, because a page cannot see the room you are standing in. If part of the reason you keep yourself small is that somebody near you punishes you for taking up space, nothing here is asking you to absorb that. Reaching for help is not a failure of humility, and in the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour.
God knows your true size, and it is not smaller than He made you.
He assigned the measure Himself. That is in the verse: the measure of faith that God has assigned. Which means the shrinking has been, all this time, a quiet disagreement with a decision He already made, conducted in the politest possible tone, and He has never once been fooled by the politeness.
You are standing at full height in His sight this minute, whatever posture your shoulders are in. The word settled that and His Spirit is the one holding it steady in you, and no sentence you have said at a counter for nineteen years has moved the figure by a hair.
What He does with the room you take from here is His to decide. Your part is the true measure. His part is what He builds with it.
Declare this over yourself
Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground you stand on rather than anything you have achieved at a counter. What He does with the room you take is His to decide, in His way and at His pace. Romans 12:3 is the measure under these words, and His Spirit is the one who makes a spoken correction settle in a person who has believed the opposite for forty years.
- Sentence I have been saying for nineteen years, you are not humility and you never were. The word tells me to think with sober judgment according to the measure God assigned, and a figure written down below its worth is a false entry however kindly it is said. I have kept true books all my working life and I am starting on my own.
- Notion that being needed would go to my head, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. Grace is given to the lowly and never weighed out according to how small anybody has made themselves, so there is no advantage left in the crouch. Take your ruler off my back.
- Lord, You made this mouth and You are not embarrassed by the work You did. I am standing at the height You cut me to, and I am bowing from there, because a person crouching has nowhere left to bow from. The measure is Yours, the posture is mine, and I am done trimming under.
