Four fifty in the morning and the truck is already warm. Coffee in a flask that has outlived two vehicles. Frost on the wire.
He knows the box at the end of Mill Lane freezes shut from November and has to be hit twice on the hinge side, not the door. He knows the dog at the yellow farm is fine if you speak first and a problem if you do not. He knows that the widow at the third gate takes her medicine at eight and that if her curtains are still shut when he comes back down the hill at nine, that is worth stopping for, and twice in twenty six years it has been.
He carries a pair of jump leads he has never needed for himself.
His nephew came out with him last summer, sat in the passenger seat for four hours, and said at the end of it, I did not know you did all this. And he said the thing he says, the way you say your own zip code.
Nothing. Just the route.
Twenty six years. Two people alive who might not be. And out it comes, smooth as anything, and afterward there is the small familiar drop, the one that has been happening so long he no longer names it, because naming it would be making something of himself.
If you have a sentence like that, the one that arrives before you have decided anything, you know the drop. And it is likely that nobody has ever told you the sentence is not humility.
Somebody gave you the wrong definition and you kept it honestly
Let me say the plain thing first, because you may have waited a long while for anybody to say it out loud.
Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It never was. Whoever gave you that gave it to you meaning well, and it was wrong.
And it was not foolish of you to take it. I want to be exact about that. You took an instruction from people you trusted, you kept it faithfully for decades at real cost, and keeping a badly worded instruction is loyalty aimed at the wrong number. There is nothing in the aiming to be ashamed of.
Now here is the instruction that actually applies to a man on a route, and it is more useful than anything anybody said at that table.
But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.Galatians 6:4
Read that twice, because it is not a soft verse and it is not saying what people think it says. Prove your own work. Test it. Look at the actual thing you actually did, on its own, with no other man in the frame. You have a work of your own, and testing it honestly is the exact instruction, not a temptation you are resisting. That is not my opinion about your route. It is written in Galatians 6:4, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a man's ears into the place where he actually lives.
Notice what Paul does with the result. He does not say you will then be embarrassed. He says a man who has tested his own work has something to rejoice about in himself alone. That word rejoicing sits there in the verse whether or not anybody has preached it to you.
So the word nothing has been the one thing on that route Paul explicitly told you not to do with your own work. You were told to prove it, not to erase it, and this is yours to put right today. The word settled that long before you started driving, and the same Spirit who inspired it is in the cab while you read this.
Your work is measured on its own, and not against anybody
Here is where a man usually goes wrong, and the verse names it. The ruler is not somebody else. Paul says in himself alone, and not in another, which cuts both ways and most people only ever hear one of them.
It rules out the man who feels grand because he did more than the fellow next to him. And it rules out you, feeling like nothing because the fellow next to you has a title and you have a truck. Both of those are the same error. Both of them measured a thing that was never the measure.
Anybody who has ever kept accounts knows what happens next. A figure written up beyond its worth is a false entry. A figure written down below its worth is exactly the same false entry facing the other way. Both wrong. Only one of them gets called modest.
You were never asked for a small account of your own work, and you were never asked for an inaccurate one. The written word asks you to prove it, and His Spirit is what makes a man able to look at his own twenty six years without flinching in either direction.
And nothing here is handing you self-promotion instead. I am careful about that, because a man who has spent decades going down is not helped by being told to start going up. That is the same false entry the other way round and it is just as tiring. Humility is not a size at all. It is a posture: a man standing at his true measure in front of a God who is immeasurably larger, and knowing exactly which of the two of them is which.
You can be at full height and bowed. That is the only way it works, in fact, because a man already crouching has nowhere further down to go.
One plain word before we move on, because a page cannot see the cab you are sitting in. If part of the reason you keep saying nothing is that somebody near you punishes you for taking up room, nothing here is asking you to absorb that. Reaching for help is not a failure of humility, and in the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour of the day or night.
God knows your true size, and it is not smaller than He made you.
He gave you the work and then He told you to prove it. That is what is written: let every man prove his own work. Which means twenty six years of nothing has been a very polite disagreement with a plain instruction, conducted in the calmest possible tone, and He has never once been fooled by the calm.
Right now, as you read this, you are standing at your full height in His sight, whatever your shoulders are doing over that steering wheel. Galatians 6:4 settled that long before you learned the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.
Here is what does not change with it. Nothing about your worth is going up today, because it was never down. There is no rank arriving in the mail. There is a set of books being corrected, quietly, by the only Accountant whose figures were right the whole time.
And what He does with the room you take from here is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is the true measure. His part is what He builds on it.
Declare this over yourself
Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words, not twenty six years of mileage. What He does with the room you take is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Galatians 6:4 is the measure under this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a man who has believed the opposite since he was twenty two.
- Word nothing, you are not the name of this and you never were. Scripture tells me to prove my own work and rejoice in it alone rather than in another, and a figure written down below its worth is a false entry however plainly it is said. I have logged every box on that route accurately for twenty six years, and I am starting on my own.
- Fear that saying it out loud would turn me into a man who talks about himself, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. Proving the work was the instruction, and proving is accurate in both directions, so there is nothing left in the crouch worth keeping. Take your hand off the back of my neck.
- Lord, You handed me the work and You told me to test it. I am standing at the height You cut me to and I am bowing from there, because a man already crouching has nowhere left to bow from. The work is Yours to give, the posture is mine to take, and I am done calling twenty six years nothing.
