There is a particular hour at a wedding when the food has landed and the noise changes. Not louder. Lower, and warmer, the sound of two hundred people all eating at the same time and nobody talking about anything important.
He knows that hour better than anybody in the courtyard, because he has been making it happen since he was twenty six. Rice with the crust on the bottom of the pot the way his grandmother did it. Lamb that started yesterday. Bread that came out of the neighbor's oven at four in the morning because his own is not big enough and never has been.
He does not sit down. He stands at the edge with a cloth over his shoulder, watching plates, and every so often somebody's aunt catches his sleeve and asks the question.
Who made the food?
And out it comes, easy as breathing, before any part of him has taken a decision about it.
Oh, the kitchen made it.
The kitchen. As though a kitchen has hands. As though the twenty two hours were weather that happened to a room. He has been saying it for twenty years and he does not remember starting, and the strangest part is that everybody there knows the truth and lets the sentence go past, because it is his sentence and they are fond of it.
Later, when the courtyard is empty and the lights are still up, he stacks chairs and feels the small drop. It has been happening so long that he no longer gives it a name. Naming it would feel like asking for something.
If you have your own version of that answer, the one that leaves your mouth before you have chosen it, you know the drop I mean. And it is quite likely nobody has ever told you that the answer is not humility.
You were handed a definition, and you have kept it faithfully
I want to say the plain thing first, because you may have been waiting a very long time for somebody to say it in a room you are standing in.
Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It never was. Whoever handed you that handed it over meaning nothing but good, and it was wrong.
And it was not foolish of you to take it. I need to be exact there. You accepted an instruction from people you loved, you kept it faithfully at real cost for two decades, and keeping a badly worded instruction is loyalty, not stupidity. The aim was wrong. There is nothing in the aiming to be ashamed of.
Now look at what is actually written about you, and read it slowly, because it is not a compliment and it is not poetry.
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.Psalm 139:14
There is a book. There were days written in it before there were any days. You are one of the works this psalm calls marvelous, and the hands that made bread at four in the morning were made first, and made on purpose. That is not my flattery. It is written in Psalm 139, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a man's ears and down into the place where he actually lives.
Notice what the psalmist does with it. He does not deflect. He says my soul knows it right well, and he says it out loud to God, and nobody in the history of the faith has managed to call David proud for that verse.
So the sentence you have been giving at every wedding has been quietly editing a book God wrote. You have been the one making the food for twenty years, and saying so plainly is accuracy rather than boasting. The word settled that before you were born, and the same Spirit who moved the writer is in the courtyard while you read this.
An accurate set of books, in both directions
Here is the part almost everybody walks straight past. Where Scripture warns against thinking too highly of ourselves, it says do not think more highly than you ought to think. Which means there is an amount you ought. Paul does not stop to prove it. He assumes you know, and he moves straight on to the actual instruction: think with sober judgment.
Sober is a weighing word. It is what you want in the person going over the figures, and the entire point of a clear head over figures is accuracy in both directions. Anybody who has ever kept accounts for a family knows it. A number written up beyond its worth is a false entry. A number written down below its worth is exactly the same false entry facing the other way. Both are wrong. Only one of them gets called modest.
You were never asked for a small set of books about yourself, and you were never asked for an inaccurate one. The written word asks for sober, and His Spirit is what makes a man able to look straight at his own life without flinching in either direction.
And nobody is handing you self-promotion instead. I am careful here, because a man who has spent twenty years going down is not helped by being told to start going up. That is the same false entry the other way round and it is just as exhausting. Humility is not a size. It is a posture: a person standing at their true measure in front of a God who is immeasurably larger, and knowing exactly which of the two of them is which.
You can be at full height and bowed. That is in fact the only way it works, because a man already crouching has nowhere further down to go.
And one plain word before we go on, because a page cannot see the room you are standing in. If the reason you keep making yourself small is that somebody near you punishes you for taking up space, nothing here is asking you to absorb that. Reaching for help is not a failure of humility. God knows your true size, and it is not smaller than He made you.
He did the making. That is what the psalm says: fearfully and wonderfully made, the substance seen before it was formed, the days written before there was one of them. Which means twenty years of the kitchen made it has been a very polite disagreement with a decision God had already taken, conducted in the warmest possible tone, and He has never once been fooled by the warmth.
Right now, as you read this, you are standing at your full height in His sight, whatever your shoulders are doing at the edge of that courtyard. Psalm 139 settled it long before you learned the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read.
Here is what does not change with it. Nothing about your worth is going up today, because it was never down. There is no new rank arriving in the post. There is a set of books being corrected, quietly, by the only Accountant whose figures were right the whole time.
What He does with the room you take from here is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is the true measure. His part is what He builds on it.
Declare this over yourself
Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words, not twenty years of standing at the edge of a courtyard. What He does with the room you take is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Psalm 139:14 is the measure under this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a man who has believed the opposite since he was twenty six.
- Answer I give at every wedding, you are not humility and you never were. The word says my substance was seen and my days were written before there was one of them, and a figure written down below its worth is a false entry however warmly it is said. I have kept honest books for everybody in this street except me, and that ends tonight.
- Fear that saying it plainly would make me a man who talks about himself, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. Sober judgment was what God asked for, and sober is accurate in both directions, so there is nothing left in the crouch worth having. Take your hand off the back of my neck.
- Lord, You saw the substance before there was any, and You are not embarrassed by the work of Your own hands. I am standing at the height You made me and I am bowing from there, because a man already crouching has nowhere left to bow from. The measure is Yours, the posture is mine, and the kitchen is not the one who made the food.
