The kitchen table has three exercise books on it, a mug with no handle, and a pencil that has been chewed by somebody who is not sorry about it. Tuesday and Thursday, four thirty, two years running.
The youngest one is thirteen and has spent nine months believing he is stupid at math. He is not stupid at math. He has been taught by four different people in two years and none of them stayed long enough to find out that he does everything right except the part where you carry the minus sign, and once you know that about him, he is fine.
She found it in the first twenty minutes. She did not make a thing of it. She said, watch, you are doing this right and this right and this right, and then here you drop the little man, and he laughed, and now the little man does not get dropped.
His mother stood in the doorway last week with her coat still on and said, I do not think you know what you have done for him.
And out it came. Smooth, quick, already loaded, the way you say your own phone number.
Oh, I am not actually smart. I just explain things.
Her mother's friend said something like it about her once when she was twelve. Not unkindly. It was a room full of adults and somebody had made a fuss about a prize, and the sentence went round the table and landed, and she has been trimming herself by half a sentence at a time ever since.
If you have a version of that line, the one that gets out of your mouth before you have decided anything, you know exactly what I mean. And it is very likely that nobody has ever told you the line is not humility.
Somebody handed you the wrong definition and you have been faithful to it
Let me say the plain thing straight away, because you may have been waiting years for somebody to say it out loud.
Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It never was. Whoever gave you that gave it to you meaning well, and it was wrong.
And taking it was not stupid of you. I want to be exact about that, because you will not be able to hear anything else until it is said. You took an instruction from people you trusted, you obeyed it faithfully at real cost for years, and obedience to a badly worded instruction is loyalty, not foolishness. It was aimed at the wrong number. There is nothing shameful in the aiming.
Now look at what you actually are, in writing.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.Ephesians 2:10
Read that with your own name in it, because it has your name in it. You are His workmanship, right now, at that table on a Tuesday, and the ability to find a dropped minus sign in twenty minutes is part of the work He did. I am not handing you a compliment. It is written in Ephesians 2:10 that you are the thing He made, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence that carries a written line past a person's ears into the place where they actually live.
Notice what the verse does not say. It does not say we are His workmanship except for the ones who explain things. It does not grade. It says workmanship, and then it says the good works were prepared beforehand, which means the thing you did in that kitchen was not something you talked your way into. It was waiting for you.
So the word just, the one you put in front of your own name, has been describing something God prepared. You have been standing in work that was laid out for you before you got there, and the standing is not pride. That is not my read of the situation. Scripture said it first, and His Spirit is the one who makes a written thing settle in a person who has believed the opposite since she was twelve.
There is an amount you ought, and Paul assumes you know it
Here is the part almost everybody walks past. When Scripture warns about thinking too highly of yourself, it says not to think more highly than you ought to think, and there is an amount you ought. Paul does not slow down to explain that. He assumes it and goes straight on to the real instruction, which is to think with sober judgment.
Sober is a weighing word. It is what you want in a person going over a set of figures, and the whole point of a clear head over figures is accuracy in both directions. Anybody who has ever kept accounts knows this. A number written up beyond its worth is a false entry. A number written down below its worth is exactly the same false entry facing the other way. Both of them are wrong. Only one of them gets called modest.
You were never asked for an inaccurate set of books about yourself, and you were never asked for a small one. The written word asks for sober, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a person able to look at their own life without flinching in either direction.
And you have not been handed self-promotion instead. I am being careful here, because a person who has spent years going down is not helped by being told to start going up. That is the same false entry the other way round and it is just as tiring. Humility is not a size at all. It is a posture: a person standing at their true measure in front of a God who is immeasurably larger, and knowing perfectly well which of the two of them is which.
You can be at full height and bowed. That is in fact the only way it works, because a person already crouching has nowhere left to go down to.
One plain word before we go on, because a page cannot see the room you are in. If part of the reason you keep yourself small is that somebody near you punishes you for taking up space, nothing here is telling you to absorb that. Reaching for help is not a failure of humility, and in the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour.
God knows your true size and it is not smaller than He made you.
He did the making Himself. That is what the verse says: His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, for works He prepared. Which means every year of trimming has been a very polite disagreement with a decision He had already made, and He has never once been fooled by the politeness.
Right now, as you read this, you are standing at your full height in His sight, whatever your shoulders are doing. Ephesians 2:10 settled that before you were old enough to argue with it, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.
Here is what does not change with it. Your value is not going up today, because it was never down. There is no new status arriving. There is a set of books being corrected, quietly, by the only Accountant whose figures were right the whole time.
And what He does with the room you take from here is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is the true measure. His part is what He builds on it.
Declare this over yourself
Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under this, not anything you pulled off at a kitchen table. What He does with the room you take is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Ephesians 2:10 is the measure under these words, and His Spirit is the one who makes a spoken correction settle in somebody who has believed the opposite since she was twelve.
- Sentence I say before anybody is kind, you are not humility and you never were. The word says I am His workmanship, made for works He prepared beforehand, and a figure written down below its worth is a false entry however sweetly it is said. I have been keeping honest books about everybody except me, and that stops at this table.
- Fear that taking my own measure would turn me into somebody I do not like, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. Sober judgment is what was asked for, and sober is accurate in both directions, so there is nothing left in the crouch for me to gain. Take your hand off my shoulders.
- Lord, You made this and You are not embarrassed by the work You did. I am standing at the height You made me, and I am bowing from there, because a person already crouching has nowhere left to bow from. The measure is Yours, the posture is mine, and I am done trimming half a sentence at a time.
