Met Down HerePsalm 113:7

In Front Of Everybody

This message is for A woman was passed over and corrected out loud in front of the people she had served for a decade, and has been on the floor since, less from the decision than from the room.

She could tell you what she was wearing. That is how these things work.

It was announced at the end of the meeting, after the coffee had already been put out at the back, so the room was half turned toward the urn when it happened. Somebody else's name, warm applause, and a sentence afterward about how they had thought carefully about the direction.

And then, and this is the part she keeps, the man leading it said something to her directly, out loud, in front of forty people. He meant it kindly. He said she had done a wonderful job holding things together and that this would free her up.

She said thank you. She has thought about that thank you a great deal.

Ten years. She started that ministry with four people and a folding table. She has driven at midnight for it, she knows which of those forty families are one crisis from the edge, and she has never once been paid.

She has not been back. Six weeks.

And she is not angry about the decision, which she could argue either way. She is on the floor about the forty people, and about a room she built turning halfway toward an urn while it happened.

If a thing was done to you in front of people, you know exactly what I mean. And nothing here is going to tell you that it was for your good.

Where He is, and where He is not

Let me say plainly what this page will not do. I do not know why that decision was made. I was not in the room where it was decided and I am not going to guess. And I am not going to tell you it was God putting you in your place, because I have no way of knowing that and neither does anybody who has said it to you in the last six weeks.

What can be said is a location, and it is a strange one.

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill.Psalm 113:7

The word behind that second image is the rubbish heap outside a town: the ash and the sweepings, the place where people who have nothing sit because there is nowhere else. It is a public place. Everybody walking past could see who was on it.

And the psalm has God going out there. Not summoning from the middle of the town. Going out to the heap.

You are on a floor God comes out to, and He is not the one who put you on it. That is not my comfort to you. It is written in Psalm 113:7, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a woman's ears into the place where she actually lives.

Notice what the psalm never says. It never says the ash heap was arranged for the person's instruction. It never grades how they got there. God's whole role in that verse is arriving and lifting, and the writer clearly assumed that needed no explanation.

So the six weeks have not been distance. You have been in a place God walks out to, and the walking out started before you got off the chair. The word settled that long before the folding table, and the same Spirit who inspired it is in your kitchen while you read this.

Being seen is its own injury and it has a name

Here is what is worth naming, because nobody around you has named it and you have been trying to fit your reaction to the wrong thing.

You keep telling yourself it should not matter this much, because the decision itself is arguable and you are a fair person. And you are right that the decision is arguable, and you are wrong that this is about the decision.

It is about forty people. It is about a room you built watching you receive it, and the involuntary arranging of your own face, and the thank you.

That is a real injury and it has a name, and the name is not humbling. To humble yourself is a posture you take on purpose in front of God. What happened in that room was done to somebody who was not consulted, in public, with the coffee out.

Those two things get called by the same word constantly and the confusion does enormous damage, because it turns an injury into a curriculum and leaves you unable to grieve it without feeling that you are disagreeing with God.

You have permission to name that as an injury rather than receiving it as an instruction, and the permission is already yours. Psalm 113 has God going out to a public heap; His Spirit is the one who lets a person grieve a thing honestly without letting go of Him in the process.

One plain word, because a page cannot see the room you are in. If the weight has gone as far as thinking about not being here at all, please tell somebody living today. In the United States, 988 answers by call or text at any hour, and if you are in danger right now, use your emergency number. And if any part of what has happened involves somebody harming you, nothing here is asking you to absorb that.

The breakthrough

God is here on the floor with you, and He did not send you down to teach you something.

Keep the second half. This page does not know what the leadership was thinking and will not pretend to. What is written is where God goes, and He goes out to the heap where everybody can see, and He goes to lift and not to instruct.

You are met exactly where you actually are, and He is not standing above this waiting for you to accept a lesson nobody has been able to name. Psalm 113:7 settled that long before the meeting, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.

And hear this: nothing on this page promises a reversal, or an apology, or a return, or anything about what happens next. I am not authorized to promise it. What He does next is His, in His own way. What is yours today is that the floor you are on is one He walks out to.

Your part is to say where you are. His part is what He builds on it.

Declare this over yourself

Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than any ministry or any announcement. What He does next is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Psalm 113:7 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken sentence in a woman who has not been back in six weeks.

  1. Room that watched it happen, you are not my judge and you do not get to keep me down here. Scripture says God raises the poor out of the dust and lifts the needy off the ash heap, which is a public place and He goes out to it. I built that room with four people and a folding table, and I am not going to pretend I imagined what I was standing in.
  2. Fear that grieving this means I am disagreeing with God, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. To humble myself is a posture I take, and what was done at the end of that meeting was done to somebody who was not consulted. Take your hand off my mourning.
  3. Lord, You come out to the heap and You did not put me on it. I am saying out loud today where I actually am, with the coffee and the applause and the thank you in it. The lifting is Yours, the saying is mine, and I was seen accurately the whole time.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
