Met Down HerePsalm 139:8

My Brother's Back Room

This message is for A man lost the house he raised his children in and has been sleeping in his brother's back room for a year, and cannot work out how to be a guest in a family he used to host.

The bed is against the wall under the window, and the window looks at the side of the garage, and there is a box of his things at the end of it that he has never unpacked because unpacking would mean something.

A year in March.

It is a good room. His brother is a good man and his brother's wife has never once made him feel it, and that is the difficulty, because if they were unkind he could be angry and anger has somewhere to go.

He raised three children in the house on Alameda. He put the swing up himself and the concrete round the post is still there with a handprint in it, and the family who live there now have a dog and a different color door.

The hardest part is not the losing. It is Sundays.

He used to have twenty two people in that kitchen. He cooked for all of them. And now he sits at his brother's table and he is a guest at a version of the thing he used to hold, and everybody is careful with him, and he can feel them being careful.

He has not said any of this out loud to anybody.

If you are sleeping somewhere that is not yours, you know exactly what I mean. And nothing on this page is going to tell you why the house went.

Who is already in the room

Let me say first what I will not do. I do not know why you lost that house. I was not there. If somebody has told you what it was for, put that down for the next ten minutes, because they did not know either.

What can be said is a location, and the psalm that says it goes further than anybody would dare go on their own.

If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.Psalm 139:8

Make my bed. The Hebrew is a bed being made in the lowest place a person could name, and David chooses that image on purpose, because a bed is not somewhere you visit. It is where you are living.

And the answer comes back with no qualification at all. Behold, You are there.

You are in a room where God is already living rather than visiting, and He got there before the box did. That is not my comfort to you. It is written in Psalm 139:8, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a man's ears into the place where he actually lives.

Notice what the verse does not do. It does not explain how the man got to the low place. It does not grade the descent or ask whether it was deserved. It reports one thing, which is who is there, and that is the whole of the comfort and it is enough to sleep on.

So the year has not been exile. You have had Him in that back room every night since March, and the being there was never conditional on how you came to be in it. The word settled that before the house on Alameda was built, and the same Spirit who inspired it is under that window while you read this.

The particular weight of being a guest

Here is what nobody names for a man in your position, and it is worth naming because you have been carrying it without a word for it.

A man who has hosted for thirty years has a way of being in a kitchen. It is in his hands. He knows where things are and he moves like somebody who knows, and it is not about authority; it is about belonging expressed as ordinary movement.

Take that away and put him at somebody else's table and the hands do not know what to do. That is the thing you feel on Sundays and it is not self pity and it is not ingratitude toward your brother. It is a body that learned one grammar and is being asked to speak another.

And the kindness makes it heavier, not lighter, which is the part you would never say out loud to them. Being carefully treated is a daily reminder of the thing being carefully treated.

You have permission to say that out loud without it being an accusation against anybody in that house. Psalm 139 has God in the low place with no comment on how anybody got there; His Spirit is the one who makes a man able to name his own position without it sounding like blame.

One plain word, because a page cannot see the house you are in. If the weight has gone as far as thinking about not being here at all, please tell somebody living today. In the United States, 988 answers by call or text at any hour, and if you are in danger right now, use your emergency number. That is not a failure. It is what a man does when a roof comes down.

The breakthrough

God is here on the floor with you, and He did not send you down to teach you something.

The second half is the one that has to hold, because you have almost certainly been offered the opposite. This page does not know why the house went and would be lying if it told you. What is written is where He is, and He is in a back room under a window that faces a garage.

You are met exactly where you actually are, and He is not standing above this waiting for the right lesson to be drawn. Psalm 139:8 settled that long before March, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.

And hear this: nothing here promises another house, or a Sunday with twenty two people in it, or any timetable at all. I am not authorized to promise that. What He does next is His, in His own way. What is yours tonight is that the room is not empty and never has been.

Your part is to say where you are. His part is what He builds on it.

Declare this over yourself

Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than any house or any address. What He does next is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Psalm 139:8 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken sentence in a man who has not unpacked a box since March.

  1. Back room I have been sleeping in for a year, you are not the end of me and He is already in you. Scripture says that if I make my bed in the lowest place there is, God is there, and the psalm never once asks how anybody got down there. He was in this room before the box was, and the box is getting unpacked.
  2. Fear that saying it out loud would sound like ingratitude to my brother, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. A man who has hosted for thirty years has hands that learned a grammar, and naming that is not an accusation against anybody in this house. Take your hand off my mouth at that table.
  3. Lord, You are here in a room that faces the side of a garage, and You were here before I was. I am saying out loud today where I actually am and I am adding nothing about what it must be for. The being here is Yours, the saying is mine, and I am not a man in a secret room.
