Met Down HerePsalm 34:18

The Word I Cannot Say Out Loud

This message is for A woman lost a job she was good at four months ago and has still not said the word out loud to anybody, so the whole of it lives in a rented room with the blind down.

There is a rented room with a blind that does not go all the way down, so there is a strip of light across the ceiling at night that she has come to know quite well.

Four months. She has a laptop, a folder of applications, and a routine that looks from the outside like a person coping.

Her mother thinks she is between things. Her friends think she left. She has not corrected either impression, not by lying, just by not finishing sentences, and it turns out you can go a very long way without finishing sentences.

She was good at that job. That is not vanity, it is the fact that makes the rest of it hard. She was the one they put on the difficult accounts, and there is an email from a client in her sent folder that she has read more times than she would admit.

And there is a word for what she is now, and she has not said it out loud in four months. Not once. Not to her mother, not to a friend, not alone in the room.

It sits behind her teeth. And she has begun to think that saying it would make it more true, which is not how words work and is exactly how it feels at two in the morning.

If there is a word you have not been able to say, you know exactly what I mean. And nothing on this page is going to tell you why any of it happened.

Where He is, which is the only thing I actually know

Let me be honest about what this page can and cannot do, because you have had four months of people who were not.

I do not know why you lost that job. I am not going to tell you what it is for, or what season it is, or what God is doing, or what will come of it, and if anybody has told you those things I would like you to put them down for the next ten minutes. They may have meant well. They did not know either.

What can be said is not a reason. It is a location.

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.Psalm 34:18

Nigh. Near. Not on His way, not waiting at the far end of the process, not standing above it with a clipboard. Near, in the present tense, to the ones who are broken.

You are on the floor of a room where God is already near, and the nearness did not wait for you to say the word. That is not my comfort to you. It is written in Psalm 34:18, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a person's ears into the place where they actually live.

Notice what the verse does not require. It does not ask the brokenhearted for an explanation. It does not ask them to have processed anything. It puts God near the broken as a fact about Him rather than as a reward for how well they are handling it.

So the four months have not been distance. You have been near Him this whole time, and it was near in the strip of light on the ceiling too. The word settled that before you ever had a job to lose, and the same Spirit who inspired it is in that room while you read this.

A word is not a spell

Here is the thing about the word behind your teeth, and it is worth taking apart gently because it has a hold on you.

You have been treating it as though saying it would do something. As though the situation were being held in a kind of suspension by your silence, and the sentence would be the thing that made it real.

It is already real. That is the hard mercy in it. Nothing you say tonight will make you more unemployed than you are, and nothing you have not said has kept you less so.

What the silence has done is something else. It has kept you alone in it. Your mother thinks you are between things because you have not finished a sentence, and a person cannot come and sit with you in a room they do not know you are in.

And there is one more thing, and I want to say it carefully. God is not waiting for the word either. He was near before you could say it and He is near while it is stuck. Saying it out loud is not the price of His nearness. It is simply that a thing named out loud stops being a shape in the dark.

You have somewhere to say it where nothing changes about how you are held, and that is already the case tonight. Psalm 34 puts the Lord near the broken; His Spirit is the one who makes a person able to say a true sentence in an empty room and still be standing afterward.

One plain word, because a page cannot see the room you are in. If the weight has gone as far as thinking about not being here at all, please stop and tell somebody living tonight. In the United States, 988 answers by call or text at any hour, and if you are in danger right now, use your emergency number. That is not a failure of anything. It is the same instinct that makes a person shout when a roof comes down.

The breakthrough

God is here on the floor with you, and He did not send you down to teach you something.

I want to be exact about that second half, because you have probably been offered the opposite by somebody who loved you. This page does not know why the job went. Nobody writing to you at a distance does. What is written, and what can be said without inventing anything, is where He is: near, now, to the broken.

You are met exactly where you actually are, and He is not standing above this waiting for you to draw the right conclusion from it. Psalm 34:18 settled His location long before March, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.

And hear this: nothing here is a promise about the next job, or the timing, or how it resolves. I am not authorized to make one and you have had enough of sentences from people who were not either. What He does next is His, in His own way. What is yours tonight is that you are not alone on that floor and have not been for four months.

Your part is to say where you are. His part is what He builds on it.

Declare this over yourself

Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than any job you have or do not have. What He does next is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Psalm 34:18 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken sentence in a woman who has not said one out loud in four months.

  1. Word I have not said in four months, you are not bigger than this room. Scripture says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves such as are of a contrite spirit, and the nearness never once waited for me to explain myself. It is already true, so nothing I say tonight can make it truer, and I am saying it.
  2. Fear that naming it out loud would finish me, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. A word is not a spell and my silence has not been holding anything up, it has only been keeping me by myself. Take your hand off my teeth.
  3. Lord, You are near right now, on this floor, in this room, with the strip of light across the ceiling. I am saying where I actually am today and I am adding nothing about what it must be for. The nearness is Yours, the saying is mine, and I am not on this floor by myself.
