Her daughter sent a voice note by accident. Twenty two seconds of a conversation neither of them knew was recording, tacked onto the front of a message about a lift to the station.
She listened to it four times.
It is not a bad conversation. Nobody is shouting. It is about the road to the coast, and which way is quicker, and her daughter says something about the new bypass, and she says the thing she says.
No, no. You go up through the village. It is quicker.
That is all. Eleven words in a perfectly pleasant tone.
And it is the tone that has been going round in her head for a week, because she has never heard it from the outside before, and from the outside it is not a suggestion. It arrives as a small door closing. Her daughter says, oh, right, and then there is nothing, and then the recording stops.
Forty years of a recipe, a route and a rule. She has been right about the village road since 1986 and she is still right about it.
She has just never heard how the being right sounds from three feet away.
If you have ever caught your own voice from the outside, you know exactly what I mean. And I am not going to tell you what it means about you.
Being right is the cheap part
Let me put something plainly and you can hold it against your own kitchen, because I do not know your kitchen.
Being right about the village road is not the achievement. It costs nothing. You have driven it four hundred times and you know it, and any person who had driven it four hundred times would know it.
The expensive part is the closing. And the closing is not in the facts; it is in the shape of the sentence, and the shape is what a person on the other end of it hears.
Nobody sets out to build a sentence like that. It builds itself, out of forty years of being right, the way a groove wears itself into a stone step. Nobody decided the step should be that shape.
Now read the proverb that everybody has heard and almost nobody has heard properly.
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.Proverbs 3:5
The word to notice is lean. It is not think. It is not know. Proverbs is not asking you to stop understanding things, and you would be no use to anybody if you did.
It is asking you not to put your weight there. A person leans on the thing that holds them up, and what you lean on is the thing you cannot be talked out of, and the thing you cannot be talked out of is the thing that shapes your sentences.
You are held up by God rather than by your own understanding, and the holding is already firm rather than something you keep steady by being right. That is not a rebuke of forty years. It is written in Proverbs 3:5, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a woman's ears into the place where she actually lives.
So the tone is not a character fault. You have somewhere else to put your weight, and it is already bearing it while you stand at the sink. The word settled that before 1986, and the same Spirit who inspired it is in the kitchen while you read this.
What a small door closing does over forty years
Here is the arithmetic, and it is nobody's fault.
Say it happens twice a week. That is a hundred a year, and forty years, and the number gets absurd, and none of them individually was anything. Not one of those sentences was unkind. You could not point to a single one and call it a fault.
But your daughter has heard four thousand of them, and she has learned, without ever deciding to, that a certain kind of remark is not worth finishing in your direction.
She still calls. She still comes. What she does not do is wonder out loud in front of you, and wondering out loud is the thing people do with people they can lean on.
And the loss is mostly yours. She has other people to wonder out loud with. You have one daughter.
You have permission to be uncertain in front of somebody, and the permission was given rather than earned by being wrong about something first. Proverbs 3 says lean not on your own understanding; His Spirit is the one who makes a person able to say I do not know about that and mean it comfortably.
One plain word before we go on, because a page cannot see the house you are in. If part of the reason you cannot let a thing be uncertain is that somebody near you makes you pay for every mistake, nothing here is asking you to absorb that. Reaching for help is not a failure of humility, and in the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour.
You do not have to be right for God to be good to you.
You are right about the village road. That is not in dispute and this page has no opinion about the bypass. It is a statement about your weight: none of it was ever resting on the accuracy of your directions, so a sentence can be left open without anything of yours falling over.
You are held up by God this afternoon, and you were held on every one of those four thousand small occasions. Proverbs 3:5 named where a person's weight belongs long before you had a daughter to be right in front of, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.
And hear this plainly, because I have been careful all the way down the page: I have not called you proud. I do not know you and no page does. What has been described is a groove worn into a step by forty years of ordinary walking, and who is now going round it.
What He does with the room you take from here is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is to leave one sentence open. His part is what He builds on it.
Declare this over yourself
Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than forty years of knowing the quicker way. What He does with the room you take is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Proverbs 3:5 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a woman who has heard her own tone for the first time this week.
- Sound of me being right, you are not what I want in this kitchen. Scripture says to trust the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding, and lean is the word, because what a person leans on is what shapes their sentences. Four thousand small doors have closed in this house and every one of them was perfectly pleasant.
- Fear that leaving a wrong thing alone would make me somebody who does not care about the truth, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. My weight is not on the village road and never was, so nothing falls over when a sentence stays open. Take your hand off the end of my no, no.
- Lord, You hold me up and my own understanding never once did. I am saying tell me about that today and then I am being quiet for as long as it takes. The holding is Yours, the quiet is mine, and I want to hear the thing before I answer it.
