Twenty-two people on stacking chairs in a community hall, and the item on the agenda is the parking lot resurfacing, which has been the item on the agenda since before the hedge was cut.
He is in the second row with a folder on his knees. Green, ring bound, colored tabs down the edge in an order that means something to him and to nobody else on earth. Printed emails, the three quotations, the letter from the council with the date circled. He is right about the resurfacing. He has been right about the resurfacing for two years, in writing, and the folder can prove every syllable of it.
He does not open the folder. He never has to. He says the thing again, calmly and accurately, and the room does the particular quiet a room does when everybody has heard a true thing before and has stopped being moved by it. Somebody suggests a working group. Everybody looks at the clock. And afterwards, out by the doors, a man says over his shoulder, you were right about the drains though, and it lands nowhere at all, because being right about the drains was never what he was carrying in there.
Maybe none of this is you and you can enjoy it as a story about somebody else. But if you did feel something go still while you read it, you already know what a folder is. It does not have to be paper. It can be a version of events you keep in good order, or three sentences you have ready in case a certain subject comes up, or a way of explaining yourself that you have polished until it is smooth. And the strange thing about it, the thing that is hard to say out loud in an ordinary conversation, is that you are usually right. That is precisely the problem. If you were wrong you could put it down.
What it costs to keep it on your knees
Nobody is going to call you proud on this page. I have never met you, I cannot see inside you, and a writer who diagnoses a stranger has done something worse than anything in your folder.
What I can do is describe the weight, because the weight is not a secret. A folder has to be carried in and carried out. It has to be current, which means every conversation gets filed. It has to be ready, which means part of you is always a little bit in the meeting, even at the sink, even on holiday, even when everybody around you is laughing at something and you are half a second late joining in. Nobody sees that part. They see a competent person who is usually right, and they are correct, and that is the trap: the folder works. It is just extremely heavy, and you have started to notice.
Here is what I actually came to say. You are already accounted for by the only one whose verdict decides anything, and that account was closed before you began keeping records. That is not a soft sentiment. It is what stands written in Scripture in language so blunt it is almost rude, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that sentence and loosens a person's grip with it, finger by finger.
But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. It is the Lord who judges me.1 Corinthians 4:3-4
A very small thing
Read what Paul is doing there, because it is not what people usually mean by humility.
He is not saying the criticism is fair. He is not saying he was wrong. He is not accepting a verdict he thinks is untrue in order to look meek, and he is not going quiet about something that mattered. He says the human court is a very small thing, and then, in the same breath, he says he does not even sit as his own judge, which is the harder half. He has taken himself off the bench in his own case. Both benches, in fact. Theirs and his own.
That is where the rest is. Not in losing the argument and not in winning it. In the case being moved to a different court entirely. You have a Judge who has already ruled, and His ruling over anyone in Christ is not under appeal. The word puts the judging squarely in His hands, and His Spirit is what makes that land as relief rather than as one more thing to be examined about.
Roll it, do not carry it
There is a psalm that says commit your way to the Lord, trust in Him, and He will act; He will bring out your righteousness as the light and your justice as the noonday. The word underneath commit is a rolling word. It is what you do to a stone that is in the road: you do not lift it and take it with you, you roll it off and keep walking.
That is a completely different verb from the one you have been using. Carrying is what you do with a folder. Rolling is what you do with something you have finished holding. And notice who does the vindicating in that psalm. Not you, and not at the meeting. He brings your case out into the light at noon, when nobody can miss it, and He does it without your help.
You have been given a vindication you do not have to arrange, and it is being kept for you at full daylight. That is the promised word of a God who acts, and His Spirit is the one who keeps a person steady in the gap between putting a thing down and seeing anything happen, which is usually the longest part.
Being corrected is not the same as being condemned
Here is the sentence some of you have never once been told plainly. A person can be wrong about something and still be entirely, unshakeably His.
Correction, when it comes, is a small event in a big security. It is the Father adjusting the grip of a child who is already in the house, already fed, already named, already going nowhere. You are His whether the meeting goes your way or not, and that was settled long before this afternoon's agenda. Scripture says there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, and it is the Holy Spirit, not your performance in a hall, who bears witness with your own spirit that you belong to Him.
And one honest word, because a page cannot see the room you are in. If the reason you cannot stop defending yourself is that somebody near you is making you pay for every mistake, then nothing here is telling you to accept that, be smaller, or go quiet. Humility never once meant standing still to be hurt. If safety is the real question tonight, put this down and speak to someone who can act: in the United States, 988 answers by call or text at any hour, and elsewhere your emergency number or a national support line will do the same.
So we are going to put it down. Not lose the argument, not agree with something untrue, not perform a smallness that God never asked you for. Put it down, which is a different act altogether, and one you get to do voluntarily.
You are free of the defending right now, and the case has been in better hands than yours since before you started keeping it. His word says it is the Lord who judges, and His Spirit is the one carrying it out of the room while you sit there with your knees empty for the first time in a long while.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, sitting where you are, before the day gets its hands on you. You speak as an ambassador here and not on your own account, which means the weight of these lines comes from the King and never from how well you argue them. Scripture is the ground under each one and the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in you. And whatever happens next about the parking lot, the drains and the person who still thinks you were wrong, the outcome is His and He has never needed a folder from anybody.
- Folder I have carried into every meeting, you are not my standing and you never were. It is the Lord who judges me, and He had the whole case read before I printed a single page of it.
- Fear that if I am wrong I am nothing, you do not get to price me. In the name of Jesus I hand you back, because Scripture says the judging belongs to the Lord, and He settled what I am worth while I was still preparing my argument.
- Lord, You are good to me today and I did not have to be right about one thing to get it. Scripture tells me to roll my way onto You and that You act, and Your Spirit is carrying what I have just set down. I thank You, because there is nothing here for me to defend, and I am giving the last word away in one conversation this afternoon.
