Rest From DefendingProverbs 12:15

Nobody Argues With Me Anymore

This message is for A woman who wins every disagreement in her small group has noticed that the room has gone quiet around her, and that the quiet arrived slowly enough that she cannot say when it started.

She noticed it on a Thursday, which is the wrong sort of day for noticing anything.

Somebody in the group said something about a passage, and she answered, and she was right, and the woman said oh, yes, you are probably right, and moved on.

And that was it. That was the whole thing.

But she went home and could not put it down, because the sentence was too quick. Nobody had thought about it. There had been no small pause where somebody weighs a thing before agreeing with it, which is the pause that means a conversation is happening.

So she counted backward, which she is good at, and she could not find the last time anybody in that room had disagreed with her. Not this year. Possibly not last year either.

Twelve people. Six years. And a room that goes smooth and quiet around her the way water goes round a stone.

She would not say she has been winning. She would say she has been right, which is a different word and is also true, and that is what makes this hard to look at squarely.

If you have noticed a quiet like that around you, you know exactly what I mean. And I am not going to tell you what it means. I am going to tell you what it costs.

The weight nobody weighs

Here is what I want to describe, and you can decide for yourself whether any of it is about you. I do not know your room and I am not going to pretend I do.

Holding a position is work. Not the being right part; that is easy, and for some people it is nearly automatic. The work is the maintenance. It is arriving at a conversation with a thing already loaded. It is tracking, through a whole evening, which points have been conceded and which are still open. It is the small alertness that never quite goes off.

People carry that for years without ever calling it a weight, because it is distributed so evenly across the day that it never shows up as a lump.

Now read what Scripture says about the other posture, and notice that it is not framed as a moral failing but as a matter of what a wise person can afford.

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.Proverbs 12:15

The wise man in that verse is not the one who was right. He is the one who could still hear. That is the entire distinction Proverbs draws, and it says nothing about whether his position was correct.

You are free to hear somebody out without losing anything, because your standing was never resting on being the last one to speak. That is not a rebuke. It is written in Proverbs 12:15, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a person's ears into the place where they actually live.

Notice the freedom in that. If your standing rests on Christ, then a conversation is not a place where anything of yours can be lost. You have a place that no disagreement can reach, and it is already yours before anybody opens their mouth. The word settled that before you joined that group, and the same Spirit who inspired it is in the room while you read this.

What a room does when it stops disagreeing

Here is the part that is worth knowing, and it has nothing to do with your character.

A room does not decide to stop disagreeing. Nobody votes on it. It happens the way a path happens: somebody takes the shorter route a few times because it is easier, and then everybody does, and then the grass grows over the other one.

Twelve people learned, without a single one of them noticing, that a certain kind of sentence is not worth starting in your direction. They still like you. They are still glad you are there. They simply route around.

And the thing that is lost is not your reputation. It is the thing you actually wanted, which was the conversation.

You cannot be sharpened by a room that has stopped bringing you anything. That is the real cost, and it lands on you rather than on them, and it is why this is worth putting down.

You are held by the One who judges rightly, and the holding does not depend on anybody in that circle agreeing with you. Proverbs 12:15 says the one who listens to counsel is wise; His Spirit is what makes a person able to hear a correction without hearing it as a loss.

One plain word before we go on, because a page cannot see the room you are in. If part of the reason you cannot let a point go is that somebody near you makes you pay for every mistake, nothing here is asking you to absorb that. Reaching for help is not a failure of humility, and in the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour.

The breakthrough

You do not have to be right for God to be good to you.

That is not a consolation prize. It is the shape of the whole thing. Your standing was never a position you argued your way into, so it is not a position anybody can argue you out of, and that is why a person in Christ can afford to lose a point.

You have nothing at stake in the next disagreement, because nothing of yours is being held in it. Proverbs 12:15 settled the definition of wise long before that Thursday, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.

And hear this plainly, because I have been careful all the way through and I am not going to spoil it now: I have not told you that you are proud. I do not know that and neither does anybody who wrote this page. What I have told you is what the holding costs and what a quiet room means. What you do with that is between you and God.

What He does with the room you take from here is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is to put down what you were never asked to carry. His part is what He builds on it.

Declare this over yourself

Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than any position you have ever held. What He does with the room you take is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Proverbs 12:15 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a person who has been holding a room without ever meaning to.

  1. Last word I have been taking for three years, you are not mine to keep. Scripture calls the one who listens to counsel wise, and it puts nothing at all in that verse about whose position turned out to be correct. Twelve people have stopped bringing me things, and the thing I lost is the conversation I actually wanted.
  2. Fear that letting a point go would mean I was never right about it, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. My standing was not argued into place and it cannot be argued out of place, so there is nothing at stake in a Thursday evening. Take your hand off the end of my sentence.
  3. Lord, You are the One who judges rightly and I am not holding my own case anymore. I am choosing one conversation today and I am letting it end without me in it. The judging is Yours, the quiet is mine, and I would rather have the room back than the point.
