His friend has asked him three times now.
Not vaguely. The first time it was over coffee and it was easy to move past. The second time it was in a car and it was direct: you would tell me, would you not, if you thought I was making a mistake. The third time was two weeks ago on the phone, at the end of a call about something else entirely, and it came out of nowhere and it was almost pleading.
And every time he has said something warm and true and beside the point.
He does think it is a mistake. He has thought so for six months, and it is not a taste or a preference; there is a specific thing he can see from where he is standing that his friend, who is in the middle of it, cannot.
He has rehearsed the sentence in the shower. It is not even a hard sentence. It is about four seconds long.
He calls what he has been doing gentleness. He would tell you, if you pressed him, that he does not want to bruise a man who is already under strain, and that there is a way to say a thing that does more harm than good, and both of those are real considerations and he has been sheltering behind them for half a year.
If somebody has asked you three times, you know exactly what I mean.
What was actually given
Let me say the plain thing first, because you may have been waiting six months for anybody to say it.
Silence is not automatically gentleness. Sometimes it is, and holding a thing back until a person can hear it is genuine wisdom and this page is not going to take it off you.
But six months and three askings is not timing. Timing has a moment it is waiting for and can tell you what it is.
Now read what Paul tells a young man who is frightened, and count what is in the list.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.2 Timothy 1:7
Three things, and they arrive together, and the reason they are listed together is that any one of them on its own goes wrong.
Power without love is a man who says the hard thing and does not care where it lands. Love without power is exactly what you have been doing for six months, which is warmth with nothing in it. And a sound mind is the third, which is the judgment about how and when, and it is the one you have been using as cover for the absence of the second.
You have been given power and love and a sound mind, and all three were given rather than developed. That is not my rebuke. It is written in 2 Timothy 1:7, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a man's ears into the place where he actually lives.
Notice what Paul is doing there. He is writing to a man who is holding back, and the first thing he does is tell him what he already has. Not what to do. What is in him.
So six months at the door has not been gentleness. You have what this requires already in you, and it did not need to be worked up before the conversation. The word settled that long before the coffee, and the same Spirit who inspired it is on the step while you read this.
The thing you are actually protecting
Here is worth being honest about, gently, because you have been honest with yourself about almost all of it.
You have told yourself you are protecting your friend from a badly aimed sentence. And you do genuinely care about that; it is not a lie.
But consider the evidence. He has asked three times. The third time was almost pleading. A man who is being protected from a conversation does not chase it down a phone line at the end of a call about something else.
He is not the one being protected. What is being protected is the moment in which he looks at you differently, and you cannot control what he does with what you say, and that is the actual thing at the door.
I say that without any accusation in it, because it is the most ordinary fear there is and nearly everybody has it. But it is worth calling it by its name, because gentleness is a virtue you can rest in and avoidance is a thing that gets heavier every week.
And notice this. He has already told you what he wants. Three times. You are not deciding on his behalf whether he can bear it. He has told you.
You have permission to say the four second sentence, and how he takes it is not something you have to carry. 2 Timothy 1 names power and love in the same breath; His Spirit is the one who makes a man able to say a hard true thing warmly and then be quiet.
One plain word before we go on, because a page cannot see the friendship you are in. If any part of this involves somebody being harmed, nothing here is asking anybody to absorb that. Tell one person who can act. In the United States, 988 answers by call or text at any hour.
Saying the true thing is not pride, and God did not ask you for your silence.
And it is not unkindness either, which is the version you have been afraid of. Love without power is warmth with nothing in it, and he has had six months of that, and he keeps asking because warmth was not what he came for.
You have power and love and a sound mind, and all three were given to you rather than earned. 2 Timothy 1:7 settled what is in you long before the first coffee, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.
And here is what does not come with it. Nothing on this page makes you responsible for how he takes it. He may be glad. He may be sharp with you for a two weeks. He may hear you and do it anyway, and that is his to do and it is not a failure of yours. You are not being asked to produce an outcome, only to say a true thing when you have been asked for it three times.
What He does with what you say is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is one true sentence. His part is what He builds on it.
Declare this over yourself
Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than any skill at saying hard things well. What He does with what you say is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. 2 Timothy 1:7 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a man who has been standing at a door for six months.
- Avoidance I have called gentleness, you are not gentleness and you are not staying. The word says God has given not a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind, and love without power is warmth with nothing in it. He has asked me three times and the third was almost pleading, and a man being protected does not chase a conversation down a phone line.
- Fear of the moment when he looks at me differently, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. That is what has actually been at the door for six months, and it is not his welfare and it never was. Take your hand off my mouth on that call.
- Lord, You gave the power and the love and the sound mind together and none of them needed working up first. I am saying one true thing out loud today and then I am stopping and letting him have it. The giving is Yours, the saying is mine, and what he does with it is his.
2 Timothy 1:7
