What I Have Not Said For Three Years

This message is for A man knows the one thing that would settle a dispute running through his family and has said nothing for three years, calling the silence respect, while the dispute has cost two weddings.

He knows what happened.

Not a version. Not what somebody told him. He was in the room in the spring of the year it started, and he heard the sentence that everybody has been arguing about, and he heard the tone it was said in, and he knows perfectly well that it was not meant the way it has been carried since.

One fact. It would take him about forty seconds.

Three years. His cousin has not spoken to her brother. Two weddings have been arranged around it, with seating charts done by people who had to think hard. His aunt cried at a funeral and it was not about the person who had died.

And he has said nothing, and the reason he gives himself is respect.

He is the youngest of that generation. He was not asked. It is not his place to walk into something between two people older than him and tell them what he heard. That would be putting himself forward, and he was raised very carefully not to do that.

The strange thing is that he half believes it and half does not, and the half that does not comes out at about four in the morning.

If you are holding something you have not said, you know exactly what I mean.

Where boldness comes from

Let me say the plain thing first, because you may have been waiting three years for somebody to say it.

Silence is not automatically humility. Sometimes it is. There is a real quiet that comes from having nothing to prove and it is a good thing to have. But a silence that is costing other people two weddings and a funeral is not obviously that, and it is worth looking at squarely rather than at four in the morning.

Now read what a council of educated men concluded about two fishermen, because the reason they gave is not the one anybody would expect.

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.Acts 4:13

They did not conclude that Peter was a naturally confident person. They did not put it down to temperament or standing or education, and they were explicitly told he had none of the last.

They traced it to company kept.

You have been with Jesus, and that is where the boldness in this comes from rather than from your place in the family. That is not my encouragement. It is written in Acts 4:13, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a man's ears into the place where he actually lives.

Notice what that removes. Every single reason you have been giving yourself is a reason about position: youngest, not asked, not my place. Peter had no position at all. What he had was a room he had been in and a Person he had been with, and that turned out to be the qualification.

So three years of quiet has not been respect. You are the one who was in the room, and that is a fact your age does not alter. The word settled that long before the spring it started, and the same Spirit who inspired it is at that table while you read this.

Respect and silence are not the same thing

Here is the distinction worth making carefully, because you were taught something real and I am not going to take it off you.

You were raised not to put yourself forward. That is a good instruction and it has made you the kind of man people are comfortable around. Keep it.

But look at what your silence actually does, in practice, in your family. It does not honor your elders. It leaves two people who love each other estranged over a sentence one of them did not say the way the other heard it, and every year that goes past makes it harder for either of them to move, because a position held for three years has cement in it.

Respect would be going to one of them, privately, quietly, without an audience, and saying: I was there. Here is what I heard. Do with it what you want.

That is not putting yourself forward. Putting yourself forward would be announcing it at a wedding. What is being described here is one conversation in a kitchen with no audience at all, and then leaving it entirely alone.

You have permission to say what you heard, and the permission does not depend on being the eldest or on being asked. Acts 4 traces boldness to company rather than to standing; His Spirit is the one who makes a man able to walk into a kitchen with one fact and no agenda.

One plain word before we go on, because a page cannot see the family you are in. If any part of this involves somebody being harmed, nothing here is asking anybody to absorb that. Tell one person who can act. In the United States, 988 answers by call or text at any hour.

The breakthrough

Saying the true thing is not pride, and God did not ask you for your silence.

Notice which sentence that is and which it is not. It is not a promise that your family will be reconciled if you speak. It might not be. Your cousin might not believe you, or might believe you and stay exactly where she is, and both of those are hers.

You have one fact and it is yours to hand over, and what anybody does with it afterward is not on you. Acts 4:13 settled where the nerve comes from long before you were born, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.

And here is what does not come with it: no test, and no schedule. If you do not speak this week nothing between you and God changes by a degree, and a man who stays quiet today has not failed anything. There is no verdict on this page.

What He does with what you say is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is one true sentence, said plainly, to one person. His part is what He builds on it.

Declare this over yourself

Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than your position in that family. What He does with what you say is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Acts 4:13 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a man who has been quiet for three years at some cost to people he loves.

  1. Silence I have called respect, you are not respect and you are not staying. Scripture says a council looked at two unlearned men and traced their boldness to the fact that they had been with Jesus, which is company kept and not rank held. Every reason I have given myself for three years has been a reason about my position, and Peter had no position at all.
  2. Fear that speaking would be putting myself forward, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. Announcing it at a wedding would be putting myself forward, and one quiet sentence in a kitchen with nobody watching is not the same act. Take your hand off my mouth at four in the morning.
  3. Lord, You put me in that room in the spring and I heard what I heard. I am saying one true thing out loud today and I am handing it over and leaving it alone. The room was Yours to put me in, the saying is mine, and what anybody does with it afterward is theirs.
