I Just Show Up

Two eleven in the morning and the phone goes, and she is awake before the second ring because she has been awake before the second ring for fifteen years.

Ward four. The one with the double doors that stick. She knows the night sister by name and the night sister knows her, and there is a chair by the window that she has sat in so many times it may as well have her name on the back of it.

She does not preach at people. She holds a hand. She says the psalm slowly if they want it and says nothing at all if they do not. Sometimes she just sits until it gets light and then goes home and puts a wash on before work.

Her street knows. If it goes bad in the night on that street, somebody calls her, and she comes.

A woman on the ward asked her last week what her role was. Chaplaincy, was it? And out it came, quick and warm and already loaded, the way you say your own address.

Oh, I do not do anything. I just show up.

Fifteen years. Hundreds of nights. Two people who told her afterward that hers was the only voice they remembered from the whole week.

And walking to the bus there was the small drop, the one she stopped naming years ago, because naming it would feel like putting herself forward.

If you have your own version of that sentence, the one that gets out before you have decided anything, you know that drop. And it is very likely nobody has ever told you the sentence is not humility.

Somebody handed you the wrong definition and you have been faithful to it

Let me say the plain thing straight out, because you may have waited a long time to hear anybody say it.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It never was. Whoever gave you that gave it to you meaning well, and it was wrong.

And it was not foolish of you to take it. I want to be exact about that, because nothing else will land until it is said. You took an instruction from people you trusted, you kept it faithfully at real cost for years, and keeping a badly worded instruction is loyalty aimed at the wrong number. There is no shame anywhere in the aiming.

Now look at the sentence Paul wrote about himself, which is the sentence I want in your mouth before this is over.

But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.1 Corinthians 15:10

Read that four times if you need to. It is the least boastful sentence in the Bible and it is also a plain, unflinching count of what a man actually did. He does not say I am nothing. He says I am what I am, by grace, and then he says out loud that he worked harder than all of them, and then he says immediately whose the strength was.

You are what you are by the grace of God, and saying so out loud is exactly what Paul did. That is not my encouragement. It is written in 1 Corinthians 15:10, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a woman's ears into the place where she actually lives.

Look at what the verse refuses to do. It refuses to pretend the labor did not happen. It refuses to take credit for the strength. It holds both, in one breath, without flinching either way, and that is the whole posture this site is trying to hand you.

So the words I do not do anything have been the one thing Paul would not say. You have labored, and the grace was not in vain, and both halves of that are yours to speak. The word settled it long before your first night on that ward, and the same Spirit who inspired it is on the bus with you while you read this.

Grace is not the opposite of an accurate count

Here is where people trip, and it is worth slowing down. Many of us were taught that if the strength was God's then the count is nothing, and it must never be mentioned. That is not what the verse does. It mentions it. It puts the labor in the sentence and then puts the credit where it belongs, and it does both without embarrassment.

That is the difference between a false humility and a true one. False humility deletes the record. True humility keeps the record straight and hands the glory to the right Person. One is an inaccurate ledger. The other is an accurate one with the right name at the bottom.

Anybody who has ever kept books knows the rest of it. A figure written up beyond its worth is a false entry. A figure written down below its worth is exactly the same false entry facing the other way. Both wrong. Only one of them ever gets called modest.

You were never asked for a small account of yourself, and you were never asked for an inaccurate one. The written word tells you whose the grace was, and His Spirit is the one who makes a person able to look at fifteen years without flinching in either direction.

And nothing here is handing you self-promotion instead. I am careful about that, because a woman who has spent fifteen years going down is not helped by being told to start going up. That is the same false entry the other way round and it is just as exhausting. Humility is not a size at all. It is a posture: a person standing at her true measure in front of a God who is immeasurably larger, and knowing exactly which of the two of them is which.

One plain word before we go on, because a page cannot see the room you are in. If part of the reason you keep yourself small is that somebody near you makes you pay for taking up space, nothing here is telling you to absorb that.
