Rest From DefendingProverbs 18:2

Right For Eleven Years

This message is for A man has been right about a disagreement with his brother for eleven years, has never once been shown to be wrong, and has not sat at the same table with him since the day he won.

He is right. That is not in question and I am not going to pretend it is.

It was about the house, and the way it was handled after their mother died, and there were documents, and he read them, and his brother did not. Eleven years later he is still right, and if the whole family were assembled and the papers were produced, everyone would say so within about twenty minutes.

Nobody has ever assembled them. That is the part he did not plan for.

His brother's daughter got married in April. He went. They were in the same courtyard for six hours and did not speak, and everybody managed it beautifully, because families are extraordinary at managing things.

There is a chair at his own table that he thinks of as his brother's chair, and he has never once said that out loud, and his wife knows anyway.

He has been right for eleven years. He has not been at a table with his brother for eleven years. Both of those are simply the facts, and he is a precise man, and he has started to notice that he keeps putting them in the same sentence.

If you have been right about something for a long time, and it has cost you a chair, you know what I mean. And I am not going to adjudicate anything. I am going to name the weight.

What holding a position actually costs

Let me describe something and you can decide for yourself whether any of it is yours. I do not know your family and I am not going to pretend I do.

A position has to be maintained. That is the thing nobody tells you when you first take one up. Being right happens once. Staying right happens every day, in small acts you would not call effort: the sentence you prepare in case it comes up, the version of the story you have smoothed by telling, the mental note about who said what in the second year.

Nobody ever adds it up, because it never arrives as a bill. It arrives as a slightly tighter chest at the mention of a name.

Here is what Proverbs says about the whole business, and it is worth reading as a description rather than as an accusation.

A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.Proverbs 18:2

Read the second half slowly, because that is where the sting is and it is not where people expect it. The problem is not that he is wrong. The problem is that what he wants out of the exchange is not understanding. What he wants is for his own position to be visible.

That is a description of an appetite, not a verdict on a man, and Proverbs is not shouting.

You are free to want understanding again, and the wanting does not cost you the truth you have been holding. That is not a rebuke of you. It is written in Proverbs 18:2, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a man's ears into the place where he actually lives.

Because here is the thing that gets missed: putting a position down is not the same as saying it was wrong. You have a standing that does not rest on anybody in that family ever conceding, and it is yours already whether or not the papers are ever produced. The word settled that before their mother died, and the same Spirit who inspired it is at your table while you read this.

An empty chair is a fact and not a verdict

Nothing here is telling you to make it right, and nothing here is telling you that eleven years was a mistake. Some things cannot be repaired from one side, and a page has no business pretending otherwise.

What can be said is narrower and it is yours alone: the position is being maintained by you, daily, and it is being paid for out of you.

There is a version of these eleven years where you are still right and the tightness is gone. Not because you conceded, and not because anybody apologized. Because you stopped carrying the case around ready to open.

That is not surrender. A man can be right and rested. Almost nobody manages it, and the reason almost nobody manages it is that the rest has to come from somewhere other than the outcome.

You have somewhere to put that case down, and the One you hand it to has never once mislaid a thing. Proverbs 18 names an appetite for being seen to be right; His Spirit is the one who makes a man able to set a true thing down without pretending it was false.

One plain word before we go on, because a page cannot see the family you are in. If any part of what stands between you and that table involves somebody being hurt, nothing here is asking anybody to absorb that. Reaching for help is not a failure of humility, and in the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour.

The breakthrough

You do not have to be right for God to be good to you.

That is not the same as saying you were not right. It is saying that His goodness toward you was never resting on the question, and so the question can be set down without anything of yours going with it.

You have a standing that is not on trial in that family, and it was never on trial there. Proverbs 18:2 was written long before the documents, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.

And hear this plainly, because I have been careful all the way down the page and I will not spoil it here: I have not told you to go to your brother. I have not told you the eleven years were your fault. I do not know your family and no page does. What has been described is the weight, and who has been carrying it.

What He does with the room you take from here is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is to put down what you were never asked to hold. His part is what He builds on it.

Declare this over yourself

Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than a survey or a document or eleven years of being correct. What He does with the room you take is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Proverbs 18:2 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a man who has been maintaining a true position at a cost nobody ever added up.

  1. Position I have been holding for eleven years, you are not worth the chair. Scripture describes a man who takes no delight in understanding but only in his own heart being visible, and it describes an appetite rather than passing a sentence on anybody. I am still right and I am putting the file down at my own table tonight.
  2. Fear that setting it down would mean I was wrong all along, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. Putting a case down is not the same as saying it was false, and a man can be right and rested. Take your hand off my chest at the mention of a name.
  3. Lord, You judge rightly and You have never mislaid a single thing anybody handed You. I am handing You the whole of it tonight and I am going to sit at my table without it. The judging is Yours, the rest is mine, and I would rather have the water than the wall.
