He heard himself do it three times last week and the third one was at his own table.
It is never the favor. The favor is real and he does it gladly and he does not begrudge a minute of it.
It is what comes afterward, usually inside the same day, sometimes inside the hour, and it arrives fully formed the way a reflex does. He does not decide it and he does not plan it and there is a small warm feeling attached to it that he does not like.
Ah well, I took her on Tuesday, so.
I did the whole thing myself, in the end, but never mind.
You know I fixed that for him and he has not said anything, but there it is.
Nothing in any of those is a lie. That is what makes it hard to get hold of. He did take her on Tuesday.
His wife has never said anything about it. His daughter said something once, six months ago, in the way daughters do, which was: you always tell us.
He has been aware of it since. And it has got worse rather than better, because now he hears it coming and it comes out anyway, and there is a second afterward where he wishes he had left it.
If there is a sentence that follows your kindnesses out of your mouth, you know exactly what I mean.
What the left hand is for
Let me put the instruction in front of you, because it is strange enough that most people never look at it properly.
But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.Matthew 6:3
It is a physical picture and it is almost comic. Your two hands are on the same body. There is no arrangement in which one of them can genuinely be unaware of what the other is doing.
Which is the point. Jesus is describing a degree of not keeping track that is beyond what a person can manage by effort, and He is describing it deliberately, because a man who is carefully not mentioning his kindnesses is still counting them.
And then the second half, which is the part that heals the first: your Father sees in secret.
That is not a threat about being watched. It is the answer to why the mention exists at all. You have a Father who has already seen it, and the seeing happened before the sentence came out of your mouth. That is not my encouragement. It is written in Matthew 6:3, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a man's ears into the place where he actually lives.
So the sentence has not been vanity. You have a witness to every one of those Tuesdays already, and He was there without being told. The word settled that long before you started noticing it, and the same Spirit who inspired it is at that table while you read this.
What it is actually buying
Here is worth naming gently, because you have started to dread it and dread will not fix it.
Ask what the sentence purchases, because nobody says a thing four times a week for nothing.
It is not applause. You would be uncomfortable with applause and everybody who knows you knows that.
It is smaller and more ordinary. It is a receipt. A moment in which the thing you did is registered somewhere outside your own head, because a good deed that nobody records feels, to some part of you, as though it might not have happened.
And that instinct is not wickedness. It is what a person does when they are not sure they are seen.
Which is exactly what the second half of that verse is for. Your Father sees in secret. That is not a rule about hiding, it is a fact about being witnessed, and a man who knows he is witnessed does not need the receipt.
You have permission to let one thing go unrecorded, and the permission rests on His seeing rather than on your discipline. Matthew 6 puts the Father's sight underneath the secrecy; His Spirit is the one who makes a man able to do a kind thing and let it disappear.
One plain word, because a page cannot see the room you are in. If part of the reason you need things registered is that somebody near you makes sure nothing you do counts, nothing here is asking you to absorb that. Reaching for help is not a failure of humility, and in the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour.
God gives grace to the lowly, and He is giving it to you today.
Not when you have gone a month without mentioning anything. Not once you have got on top of it. Today, with three from last week and the one at your own table.
You have grace arriving in an ordinary week, and it has never once been withheld over a sentence you wished you had left. Matthew 6:3 settled that the Father sees in secret, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.
And notice what is not here. Nobody is grading you and nothing on this page sets a rule you have to keep, because a rule about not mentioning things would be one more thing to monitor and you would be counting again by Thursday.
There is no timetable in this either. Nothing promises that the reflex is gone by Christmas.
The low place is a place with grace already in it. That is the claim, and it holds on a week where you mentioned it four times.
What He does with today is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is one small thing. His part is what He builds on it.
Declare this over yourself
Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than any favor you have ever done anybody. What He does with today is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Matthew 6:3 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a man who heard himself do it three times last week.
- Sentence that follows every favor, you are staying in today. Scripture says let not the left hand know what the right hand does, and that the Father who sees in secret has already seen it. That sentence was never after applause, it was a receipt, and I have been getting receipts for a thing that was already witnessed.
- Fear that a good thing nobody registered might not have happened, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. He was in the car on Tuesday and He was at the far end of that job, and the record was kept before I opened my mouth. Take your hand off my evening.
- Lord, You see in secret and You saw all three of them last week without being told. I am doing one small thing today and keeping the sentence in, and then I am saying You saw that. The seeing is Yours, the quiet is mine, and the lane was clear either way.
