The people who love her have started to brace. She has noticed it, which is worse than not noticing.
You can see it happen at about the fourth word. Somebody says something warm, and her face does the right thing, and then there is a small gathering, the way a swimmer gathers before a turn, and out it comes.
Thank you, but honestly it was mostly her.
Thank you, but you did not see the first draft.
Thank you, but I was late and I nearly did not come at all.
Every single one of them is true. That is what makes it hard to argue with and hard to stop. She is not fishing and she is not performing. She genuinely believes that leaving the sentence at thank you would be accepting something she has not earned, and she has never in her life accepted something she has not earned.
Her sister said last month, half laughing, that she would like to hear one whole thank you before she dies. And they both laughed, and then it was quiet for a second too long.
If you have your own word that goes on the end, you know exactly what I mean. And it is quite possible nobody has ever told you the word is not humility.
The thing you were warned against is not the thing you are doing
Let me say the plain thing first, because you may have been waiting years for anybody to say it out loud.
Humility never meant holding yourself cheap. It never did. Whoever handed you that handed it over meaning well, and it was wrong.
And it was not foolish of you to take it. I want to be exact, because nothing else lands until it is said. You took a rule from people you trusted, you kept it faithfully at real cost, and keeping a badly worded rule is loyalty aimed at the wrong number. There is nothing in it to be ashamed of.
Now read what is written about the one thing your but has been trying to qualify.
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.Romans 8:38
Look at the size of the list. Death. Life. Angels. Powers. The present. The future. Height and depth, which is Paul saying up and down, which is Paul saying everything. And then, in case anything got out, nor any other created thing.
You are held inside a love that nothing in the entire created order is able to separate you from, and your qualifying clause is a created thing. That is not my reassurance. It is written in Romans 8:38, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a person's ears into the place where they actually live.
That is not a joke at your expense. It is the exact comfort of the verse. Paul goes to the trouble of listing angels and powers and the future precisely so that the small strong things in your own head are covered by the same sentence.
So the word after thank you has not been humility. You have been trying to qualify something Scripture has already sealed shut, and putting the word down changes nothing about the love and everything about the day. The word settled that before you were born, and the same Spirit who inspired it is in the room while you read this.
The word is not honesty, and you are not a liar for stopping
Here is the thing you will reach for, so let us take it apart before you do. You will say: but they are all true. The first draft was bad. She did do most of it. I was nearly late.
Yes. And a thank you is not a report.
When somebody says a warm thing to you, they are not filing an assessment for you to correct. They are handing you something. The polite response to a handed thing is to take it. Adding the true qualifier is not accuracy in that moment; it is a change of subject from what they are doing back to what you are worth, and you have been changing that subject for years.
There is also this, and it is gentler than it sounds. Every but teaches the people who love you that warmth toward you will be returned unspent. They keep doing it because they love you. But they brace. Your sister braces.
You have permission to let a sentence stand, and the permission is already given rather than something to be earned by feeling worthy first. Romans 8 says nothing separates you from that love; His Spirit is the one who takes a line like that out of the page and puts it somewhere in the middle of a conversation on a Tuesday.
One plain word before we go on, because a page cannot see the room you are in. If part of the reason you cannot let a kind thing stand is that somebody near you punishes you for taking up space, nothing here is telling you to absorb that. Reaching for help is not a failure of humility, and in the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour.
God delights in you, and saying so does not make you proud.
He did the loving first and He sealed it against everything. That is what is written: neither death nor life nor things present nor things to come nor any other created thing. Which means every but has been a very polite disagreement with a settled matter, conducted in the most reasonable possible tone, and He has never once been fooled by the reasonableness.
You are inside that love right now, in the middle of a conversation, with the word still forming. Romans 8:38 settled it long before you learned the habit, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.
And hear this, because it is the half that is usually missed: your worth is not going up today. It was never down. Nothing here is asking you to think well of yourself as an achievement, because a good opinion you have to keep polished is only the same treadmill with a friendlier surface. You are not being asked for a verdict on yourself at all. You are being asked to stop editing His.
What He does with the room you take from here is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is to let a sentence stand. His part is what He builds on it.
Declare this over yourself
Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than anything you did well or badly this week. What He does with the room you take is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Romans 8:38 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a woman who has been qualifying kindness her whole life.
- Word I attach to the end of every thank you, you are coming off my sentence. Scripture says that neither death nor life nor things present nor things to come nor any other created thing can separate me from the love of God in Christ Jesus, and my qualifier is a created thing. The people who love me have been bracing, and that stops today.
- Fear that letting a sentence stand would make me somebody who thinks well of herself, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. A thank you is not a report and nobody handed me an assessment to correct. Take your hand off my mouth at the fourth word.
- Lord, You loved me first and You sealed it against every created thing including the ones in my own head. I am letting the sentence stand today and I am standing in the pause after it. The sealing is Yours, the stopping is mine, and my sister is going to hear one whole thank you this week.
