Low And BelovedPsalm 103:13

One Second Later

This message is for A woman was taught that thinking well of herself was the first step of falling away, and now puts herself down within one second of any good feeling, so fast that she has stopped noticing the drop.

She got a message on Thursday that said one line: you changed my life when I was fifteen and I have never told you.

There was about a second. In that second something in her chest came up like a bird off water, warm and completely without argument, and it was lovely.

And then the second ended.

By the next breath she had explained it. She had been one of four adults around that girl. It was probably the youth worker really. She had not even been very good that year; she had been going through her divorce and had barely held it together. And anyway people remember things wrongly at fifteen.

She did not decide to do any of that. It arrived the way a reflex arrives, fully assembled, and she was not aware of any effort.

She was taught at nineteen, in a group she loved, that thinking well of yourself is where a fall begins. She has been obedient to it for twenty six years, and it has become so fast that she no longer notices the drop.

The message is still on her phone. She has read it eleven times, always in the same way: read it, feel it, put it down.

If you have your own second, and your own thing that arrives at the end of it, then you know exactly what I mean. And it is quite possible nobody has ever told you the reflex is not obedience.

The thing you were warned against is not the thing that is happening

Let me say the plain thing first, because you may have been waiting twenty six years for anybody to say it out loud.

Humility was never a low opinion of yourself. It never was, in any part of Scripture, in any language it was written in. Whoever handed you that handed it over meaning well, and it was wrong.

And it was not foolish of you to take it. I want to be exact, because nothing else lands until it is said. You were nineteen and you were in a room with people you loved, and they used a word with weight in it, and you believed them. That is not gullibility. That is what an honest person does with an authority they have no reason to doubt yet.

Now read what God is actually like toward a person who is not much, because the psalm goes straight at it.

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.Psalm 103:13

He knows the frame. He remembers the dust. And what He does with that knowledge is the thing to notice, because it is not what you would do with it.

He does not use it against you. He pities, in the old sense, which is tenderness and not condescension. The frailty is the reason for the gentleness rather than the evidence in a case.

You are known all the way down and held tenderly at exactly the place you would have used against yourself. That is not my kindness. It is written in Psalm 103:13, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my sentence who carries a written line past a woman's ears into the place where she actually lives.

So the second is not humility. You have a Father who finished the sentence about your frailty with tenderness, and He has never once finished it with contempt. The word settled that long before you were nineteen, and the same Spirit who inspired it is in the room while you read this.

The reflex is not a sin to repent of

Here is the part I most want you to hear, because you will otherwise take this article and turn it into one more thing you are failing at.

You are not being told off. The reflex is not rebellion and it is not vanity in disguise. It is a habit that was installed in you by an instruction you obeyed, and habits are not confessed away. They are put down, slowly, usually with somebody standing beside you while you do it.

You have been repenting of your own gladness for twenty six years. It has not worked, because there was nothing there to repent of.

And notice something about the psalm. It does not ask you for a better opinion of yourself. It never mentions your opinion at all. It describes His. That is a relief if you let it be one, because a good opinion of yourself is one more thing to keep in repair, and you are tired enough.

You have permission to let the second run on into a third and a fourth, and the permission is already given rather than earned by finally feeling worthy of it. Psalm 103 says He knows your frame; His Spirit is the one who takes a line like that out of the page and holds it in the chest of a woman looking at her phone for the eleventh time.

One plain word before we go on, because a page cannot see the room you are in. If part of the reason you cannot let a good thing stand is that somebody near you punishes you for it, nothing here is telling you to absorb that. Reaching for help is not a failure of humility, and in the United States 988 answers by call or text at any hour.

The breakthrough

God delights in you, and saying so does not make you proud.

He knew the frame before you did and He was tender about it first. That is what is written: like as a father pities his children, so the Lord pities them that fear Him, for He knows our frame. Which means twenty six years of the second has been a very polite disagreement with a tenderness God had already decided on, and He has never once been fooled by the politeness.

You were loved through every one of those seconds, and you are loved with the message still open on your phone. Psalm 103:13 settled it long before that room when you were nineteen, and the Holy Spirit is holding it steady in you while you read the line.

And hear this, because it is the half that gets missed: your worth is not going up today. It was never down. Nothing here is asking you to feel better about yourself, because a feeling you have to produce is one more job and you already have too many. You are not being asked for a verdict on yourself at all. You are being asked to stop overturning His.

What He does with the room you take from here is His to decide, in His own way. Your part is to let it stand. His part is what He builds on it.

Declare this over yourself

Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that is the ground under these words rather than anything you did or failed to do when you were thirty. What He does with the room you take is His to decide, in His own way and at His own pace. Psalm 103:13 is the word underneath this, and His Spirit is the one who settles a spoken correction in a woman who has been putting herself back down inside a second since she was nineteen.

  1. Second that follows every good thing I feel, you do not get to have it. The word says He knows my frame and remembers I am dust and that He pities me like a father, and He has never once finished that sentence with contempt. I have been repenting of my own gladness for twenty six years and there was never anything there to repent of.
  2. Fear that letting a warm thing stand is where a fall begins, you are dismissed in the name of Jesus. The psalm never asks for my opinion of myself, it only reports on His, so there is nothing in the drop for me to keep. Take your hand off the end of my minute.
  3. Lord, You knew what I was made of before I did and You were gentle about it first. I am standing still in a good thing for one whole minute today and I am not gathering the correction. The tenderness is Yours, the standing still is mine, and I am reading that message a twelfth time tonight.
